Captain Jordan Dawson and Showdown medallist Riley Thilthorpe have slotted two second-quarter goals apiece to mastermind a 4.3-to-nil shellacking since the opening break. Dawson showed why he is one of the favourites for this year’s Brownlow Medal by slotting his second successive goal, sharking Reilly O’Brien’s tap and finishing with typical class. Then powerhouse Thilthorpe’s mark and goal put the Crows in the driver’s seat for the first time. The Crows are in front Thilthorpe got on the lead and pulled in a mark. He went back and kicked the goal and now the Crows are in front. Who saw this coming? Over to you Hawks. Crows 34, Hawks 33 with 10 mins to go in Q2. Analysis: Don’t look now, but the Crows are coming By Steve Barrett The Crows are coming. A series of quick goals to start the second quarter have the Crows suddenly up by a point. What a momentum swing. The Crows have turned the tables at stoppage and are back to breaking tackles again after being bullied by the Hawks early. RIley Thilthorpe spilled a mark against James Sicily, recovered spectacularly and converted magnificently, before Jordan Dawson added another, shrugging Karl Amon’s tackle and threading a beauty on the back of James Peatling’s strong clearance. Reilly O’Brien is getting right on top of Lloyd Meek in ruck, while Adelaide’s mids have shrugged off their early nightmare to finally give their Hawthorn counterparts something to ponder. Now Jordan Dawson is in charge of the match and he’s dragging his whole football club, maybe his whole state bar the region of Port Adelaide, with him. Captain’s goal for Dawson If you haven’t watched the Crows in recent years, you won’t know that Jordan Dawson has become an outstanding leader since heading home to South Australia and he loves coming up with a captain’s goal. He just shrugged off two tackles, stepped into the 50-metre arc and booted a goal. Jordan Dawson of the Crows leads his team out.Credit: Getty Images That’s two straight for the Crows. Here they come. Hawks 33, Crows 21 with 15 mins to go in Q2. Thilthorpe on the board Riley Thilthorpe dropped an absolute sitter of a mark in the goal square but he reacted first to get hands on the bouncing footy and snapped the goal. He has great persistence, even when his fingers let him down. The Crows are up and about again. Hawks 33, Crows 15 with 15 mins to go in Q2. The parochial home crowd has been stunned into silence by Hawthorn’s awesome ambush. Following last weekend’s Showdown demolition, Crows coach Matthew Nicks lauded his side’s tackling supremacy – sticking them and shrugging them. Against Hawthorn’s immense heat, the Crows have been bullied relentlessly. “They’re being beaten at their own game,” Garry Lyon said on Fox Footy. “They’re being beaten in pressure and tackling. They’re defending for their lives.” Darcy Fogarty finally landed Adelaide’s first goal right on the 30-minute mark of the opening term, the only moment of joy for Adelaide supporters as the Hawks hold an imposing 26-point lead at quarter-time. Friday night quarter-time clearance count: Will Day six, Adelaide five. That is not a misprint. Hawthorn, led by Day, have annihilated the Crows at centre-bounce, on the ground and pretty much everywhere else. The Hawks are also out-tackling Adelaide 18-11. Sam Mitchell’s men have come out with some serious intent. The shell-shocked Crows need a huge lift. Quarter-time stats QT: Hawthorn 5.3 (33) to Adelaide 1.1 (7) The Hawks couldn’t have scripted this first term better while the Crows and their supporters are utterly stunned. Gunston has kicked two goals while the Hawks are winning contests across the ground. “They are being beaten at their own game, being beaten at pressure and tackles,” Garry Lyon said on Fox Footy.
