Newly crowned NCAA indoor high jump champion Temitope Adeshina will lead a strong list of Nigerian athletes to the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China from March 21st - 23rd.
The Texas Tech University sophomore student who made history Saturday as the first Nigerian woman to claim the high jump gold at the NCAA Division 1 indoor track and field championships has been registered to compete alongside eight other athletes by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).
Adeshina will hope to become Nigeria's first high jumper to make it to the podium in the history of the global event.
Also listed is rising star Prestina Ochonogor, and she will be competing in the long jump event. The 18-year-old made it to the final of the Paris 2024 Olympics and the World U20 Championships last year and will be hoping for another final appearance at a global competition.
In the men's category, Baylor University's Ezekiel Nathaniel will lead the charge in the 400m event.
Last month, he blazed to a new 400m indoor African record of 44.74s, which is the second fastest time in the world this year, and he will fancy his chances of becoming the second Nigerian man after the late Sunday Bada to win gold at the championship.
Nathaniel is also listed in the 4x400m relay team alongside reigning African Games 400m champion Chidi Okezie, Ifeanyi Ojeli, Edidiong Okon Udo, and James Onwuka. Caleb Joshua will run the men's 60m.
Multiple African Shot Put champion Chukwuebuka Enekwechi is registered to compete in his trademark event.
Long jump queen Ese Brume was Nigeria's last medallist at the World Indoor Championships when she claimed silver medal at the 2022 edition in Belgrade.
Consequently, Nigeria last mounted the podium as World champion in 2008 when Olusoji Fasuba made history as the first and so far only African man to win the 60m gold.
