Akshay Bhatia's Surprising Texas Open Approach ahead of The Masters
@Source: newsweek.com
Akshay Bhatia, the 23-year-old golf sensation, has been making waves in the golf world since his breathtaking performance at The Players this year. Bhatia clinched $1 million of the purse, a record payday for young pro.Bhatia surprisingly then skipped all subsequent events, only to return at the $9.5 million tournament in Texas this week for the Valero Texas Open.This event marked his second career PGA Tour victory, but will be his first shot at repeating.Last year, he was tied with Denny McCarthy in the final round, and it took a nail-biting playoff to secure the trophy. His victory opened the door for his debut in the Masters tournament, where Scottie Scheffler etched his name in history for the second time.Prior to teeing off this week, Bhatia addressed his mental approach with a surprising revelation."To be here, and obviously my first time defending a tournament, it's pretty cool. A lot of good memories," he said."I've always loved this event, very special place for me and my fiancée, who we met here in 2022."However, despite the significance of defending his title, Bhatia appears surprisingly nonchalant about the prospect of winning again. And we say that for a reason.When asked about his feelings on defending his title for the first time, he revealed, "I mean, I haven't really thought about it. I feel like it's just another week.""I have my mind really set on Augusta next week, so it's a great week on this golf course to kind of learn where my game's at, what kind of shots I need to improve on for next week," he explained."It's a great golf course for that, very narrow, very tricky. It's obviously going to be windy here. I just kind of feel normal."The California native then detailed the mantras he lives by, famously writing them on his wrists."I remember I wrote – my goal was to get to 35th in the world by the U.S. Open deadline, so I wrote that one day," he shared, reflecting on his goal-setting process."Then I wrote 'wire to wire,' obviously leading every single day. Then I wrote 'race my race.'" He completed that goal, but now he has bigger fish to fry.Repeating as Texas Open champion would surely be nice, but Bhatia clearly has his mind elsewhere.More Golf: Tiger Woods' Union with Don Jr.'s Ex Gets Presidential Seal of Approval
