All Black's Test debut plunged into doubt by bizarre off-field incident with dog

Leroy Carter is set to make his debut for the All Blacks in the Rugby Championship later this month but his first outing was plunged into doubt after his dog ate his passport. New Zealand face Los Pumas on Saturday, August 16, and will play them again in Buenos Aires a week later. Scott Robertson named his squad for the first trip of the tournament, with the All Blacks travelling to South America to take on Argentina. Carter is one of four uncapped players named in the collective, but very nearly couldn't go. Carter explained that he left his passport on the bedside table while his partner went to the gym, and the dog got his jaws around it and made life all the more difficult for the Chiefs utility back. "I got my passport out to take a photo to send to the [team] manager and I just left it on my bedside table," he said. "My partner went to the gym and left my dog home alone and it’s gone down the hallway, jumped on the bed and just chewed up the passport and my teeth aligners. "It was a bit of a shambles yesterday. I was trying to get an emergency one but I think it’s all [sorted] now. "I thought it would happen to me, something like that, so no point getting stressed about it." The All Blacks are due to fly out on Friday ahead of their opening-round clash next week. Carter has previously represented New Zealand in Sevens at the Paris Olympics and the 26-year-old has impressed in his debut season in Super Rugby. Speaking about the call-up, Carter said: "I got a call from a private number. I figured if there was ever a time to answer one of those, this was it. It was Scott Robertson congratulating me on my selection. "I honestly can’t remember much of what he said after that. I was emotional, just stoked. The boys were buzzing for me, but I was still in a bit of shock." Other call-ups to the All Blacks squad include 22-year-old 6ft 4in Chiefs back-rower Simon Parker, who is a club team-mate of Carter. Prop Tevita Mafileo and scrum-half Kyle Preston will be joining Parker and Carter as fresh faces in camp for their trip to Argentina. Speaking about the new players, Robertson said: "Simon Parker had an impressive Super Rugby season with the Chiefs and brings a valuable skillset and physicality that we are looking forward to working with. "He has the ability to play blindside or number eight and has gained experience in a number of New Zealand representative teams, so we believe he is ready for the step up. "While we are clearly disappointed for our men who are currently recovering from injuries, that has also created opportunities for a number of deserving players including the uncapped Tevita Mafileo, Kyle Preston and Leroy Carter."
