Ambati Rayudu: The Unapologetic MS Dhoni Superfan 'Stuck' In IPL Commentary Job
@Source: news18.com
Who doesn’t admire Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s contribution to the game of cricket? The man who took India to many a glories commands houseful games even at the age of 43. Each time Dhoni walks out on the cricket field donning the Chennai Super Kings jersey in the Indian Premier League, the Yellow Army goes berserk and the whistles are piercing. But what happens when a cricket commentator, whose job is to narrate, analyse, and critique performances, joins the fans unabashedly? You get Ambati Rayudu. A section of cricket watchers and listeners, however, are displeased by this. They firmly believe that the relentless and sometimes over-the-top praise for Dhoni by his former CSK colleague turned commentator Rayudu has hampered their IPL viewing experience. Rayudu has no qualms about it and he’s responded to growing criticism towards his bias for Dhoni by doubling down. So how did it all start?
An anonymous vigilante using the username of JosD92 has gone massively viral in IPL 2025. His modus operandi is simple. JosD92 joins the live streams of IPL analysis on cricket-oriented channels on YouTube. Once there, he pays a certain amount to highlight his comment (Super Chat) to convey his criticism for Hindi commentary in the ongoing season of IPL while taking sarcastic jibes at Ambati Rayudu for his non-stop praise for Dhoni on the mic.

The language is crude in nature but the message is simple. Many believe that JosD92’s unique approach has seemingly brought a tonal change in the Hindi commentary broadcast.
Navjot Singh Sidhu Hits Back
Rayudu and Navjot Singh Sidhu recently engaged in a war of words on air during a recent contest between Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings. Rayudu took a harmless jibe at Sidhu for changing his teams frequently and called him a ‘Girgit’ (chameleon). “Aap team badal rahe ho (You are changing your team),” Rayudu said.
Sidhu responded immediately and silenced his fellow Hindi commentator. “Is sansar me girgit ki tarah koi hai to tumhare aradhyadev hai ((If there’s someone like a chameleon in this world, it is your idol).”

Although Sidhu did not name names, fans felt Sidhu was referring to Dhoni as Rayudu’s “aradhyadev”. To make things even more comical, the camera then panned to Dhoni.
Cricket Or Battle Field?
Dhoni, who has been criticised for his batting positions in the current season, promoted himself in the match against Punjab Kings. CSK required 69 off 4.1 overs while chasing a steep target of 220 posted by PBKS when Dhoni came out to bat. CSK were finally showing intent and the 43-year-old’s “energised” entry showed positive signs.
“He is running down the stairs; the intent is quite visible through the run,” Navjot Singh Sidhu said upon his arrival. In contrast, Rayudu, the fellow commentator, described Dhoni’s entry a bit more dramatically. “Dhoni is coming out with a sword, not the bat. The sword will be wielded tonight, and Dhoni’s sword will be wielded.”
Sidhu, puzzled, responded by saying: “You’re saying like he is not coming to play cricket but to fight a war.”
Virender Sehwag Fires Back
“There was a statement about an uncapped player who hails from Jharkhand. He used to play helicopter shot. He batted yesterday but came in late. It wasn’t his fault. He was late in the context of the match,” Aakash Chopra said on Star Sports, while discussing Dhoni’s role with bat against PBKS.
“Look at him, our Thala. What an incredible inning he played. He came with an intent. The energy is increasing in the commentary box while watching his sixes. This player is special, Viru paaji. You’ll spot a yellow jersey at every ground. Even in the commentary box, I will wear one and come,” Rayudu said while describing Dhoni’s inning.

Virender Sehwag, who was the third commentary on the Hindi panel, responded cheekily to Rayudu and remarked by saying: “I am not denying that the player is special. But you said the “young player” used to hit the helicopter shot. I was just correcting the grammar. He still hits those shots. You should have said this,” Sehwag sledged Rayudu.
Rayudu Responds
Rayudu finally broke and took to ‘X’ to respond to all the criticism that has come his way for showing Dhoni love on-air. He admitted that he was and will always be a Dhoni fan. The energy put in crucifying him over his words for CSK player could be channeled elsewhere, he added.
“I was a Thala’s fan. I am a Thala’s fan. I will always be a Thala’s fan. No matter what anyone thinks or does. It will not make a one percent difference. So please stop spending money on paid pr and donate that to charity. Lot of underprivileged people can benefit,” Rayudu posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).
His post was later turned into a viral meme format by users on ‘X’ almost instantly.
