IANASWRS (not a swift water rescue surgeon, but...) wonder if they could have blocked or dammed the water leading into where homey got trapped to reduce the suction around his leg.

That seems like an interesting story, but that format makes it nigh unreadable.

You should read some history around that river.

Better to just break bones to get the leg to bend in unnatural ways to facilitate extraction.

Yeah, this whole thing reeks of conspiracy. Nice flex guys, very dramatic. You can't even have peace in Tasmania, is there no place left unspoiled by the fiendish limb lust of Big Amputation?

Femur does not break easily. And if they had to do it in this situation,it would have probably required some leverage they may not have been capable of producing. Not to mention, it might have made the problem worse, both by taking too long or (if they'd done it earlier) putting him in a position where they would have had to cut off the leg anyway, now with an even greater chance of infection or worse

Not true. A CAT tourniquet and a garrote saw can have a leg amputated in less than 45 seconds. Less than 10
If you can use a skill saw with a sterile blade.
Ask me How I know.
