Analysis: Downed, devastated but not disheartened, destructive Leinster post a new Magners/Pro12 record

Leo Cullen praised his charges for staying focussed through this week and, given the opportunity, pasting Zebre at the Aviva - the seventy-one point, 76-5, margin is a URC record.
Seven days too late maybe, in front of nearly 30,000 fewer fans, and with some Blue on Blue fall out as Jordi Barrett was Man of the Match by miles and miles...But Leinster found their attacking rhythm and defensive steel in dragging Zebre from pillar to post for 80-plus minutes, scoring 12 tries in all."The score here is irrelevant really," admitted Cullen, "when you have a defeat like that you have to get back playing again and we have the other tournament (URC) to go after."It is just about putting in a performance and getting fans a look at what they are used to, some entertaining rugby, getting back moving again when you fall down, one foot in front of the other, when you fall down isn't it?"We needed to turn the page during the course of this week, there was a bit of positivity in terms of the news of 12 Lions during the week too and we did and we need to continue this mindset."That’s the way it feels, really. It gets us back performing again in front of fans. The reality of sport is to compete at the top end, you need to make it a product that people wantto come and see."Listen, we get that there’s a huge amount of disappointment from last week. For us, we’d love to have our time back but we don’t get it back, do we? It was a challenging week on lots of fronts."Of course, the time can't be rewound, Northampton are still in the Champions Cup final."Today’s not a cure for any of that, really, but you’ve got to get back out there, get back performing again, seeing players running around with smiles on their faces on the back of positive actions and hopefully fans will come out to see us"It's a start, then it’s on to the next game – Glasgow here next Saturday and hopefully we can do the same – URC champions and I’ve just seen that they got beaten today"It’s to rebuild quickly. We know that a lot of great work has gone in over the course of the season to get us into top spot – though we know that doesn’t guarantee us anything because we’ve already lost a play-off game at home."Can we learn from the sting of last week’s defeat? We haven’t done a good job of that in the previous couple of seasons so we need to deliver there"It’s a bit of an emotional roller-coaster, really, because it stings so badly. Today’s not going to cure it unfortunately."As it was, Ronan Kelleher opened the scoring in the third minute with Luke McGrath, Ryan Baird and Barrett crossing to bring in the bonus point after just 24 minutes.Barrett, James Lowe, Sam Prendergast, Josh van der Flier, Jamie Osborne and Ciaran Frawley added further tries to the hour, whereupon Gonzalo Garcia touched down for Zebre's lone score in the 66th minute. James Culhane and Osborne rounded out the scoring.Barrett, as mentioned, was Man of the Match the coach grinning and allowing the All Black was a part of a 'competitive centre partnership' before working in special for Prendergast's bounce-back from last week.“I’ve tried to push this message and sometimes it can be hard to convince people, Sam is a young No 10 and can you name a young No 10 who comes through seamlessly through the course of their career.“It’s a challenging position to play, it’s hard. The decision-making, the scrutiny, you have a closed skill like goal-kicking as well unless there’s someone who can take that off your hands. “That’s just one component, think of all the mental energy and practice that goes into that.“There’s play-calling, because of where you are in terms of defensively, there’s a lot of things go into it and for a young player to go through it from our game specifically, it’s not easy."Not everything is going to happen overnight for Prendergast.“There’s going to be bumps in the road. From the character part, you have to be able to display the right character to stand up to some of the flak you’re going to get at different stages.“You don’t go from this player who is top of the world to suddenly being the worst player of all time, it’s not realistic. You need to operate somewhere in the middle in terms of the attention, the criticism, the praise. It goes with the territory.“We can’t control what are just habits, we can only control what we do; having good habits, pick what we can for this game, put them into effect, train well, put it into a good performance each week. “It’s a hard learning ground for young No 10s in particular, that’s why we’re protective. Sam is dealing with it well, everyone’s had to take a bit of the criticisms and maybe that’s part of the territory for us - not just Sam, it’s all of us.”It is all eyes down, ignore the outside noise, for the run to the end of the season, there is no need to rotate or rst players, it is Zebre this week, Glasgow next week, a week's rest, the quarter-final following week with the semi-finals and final from there.Continues Cullen: "Criticism is part of the job spec and I understand there is expectation on this team."Nothing has changed in that regard, if the result goes well or goes badly I don't think I change my stance, it is about doing what is best for the group."It is a credit to Northampton, we said it at the time, they did a good job."There is a lot of talk about pressure but we need to flip that and apply pressure on the opposition."Leinster: Osborne, J O’Brien, Ringrose (Henshaw 50), Barrett, Lowe; Prendergast (Frawley 50), McGrath (Gibson-Park 29-35, 66); Boyle (Porter 50), Kelleher (McKee 50), Clarkson (Slimani 50), McCarthy (Ryan 50), Mangan, Baird, van der Flier (Culhane 50), Conan captZebre Parma: Trulla (Fusco 53), Gregory, Paea, Lucchin, Gesi, Montemauri (Da Re 53), Garcia, Franceschetto (Hasa 29), Ribaldi (di Bartolomeo 47), Pitinari (Neculai 61), Nasove (Canali 58), Krumov, Stavile (Drago 69) , Bianchi, Ruggeri (Ferrari 69) capt
