Andy Murray put his trademark sense of humour to use after meeting Lionel Messi at the Miami Open. Murray is in Florida working as a coach for Novak Djokovic , who takes part in the final against Jakub Mensik on Sunday. Djokovic and Mensik both met the Inter Miami player before their semi-finals on Friday, with the Argentina star visiting the Hard Rock Stadium with his family. Even with Djokovic playing on the court, Messi was the star attraction, with fans mobbing him to try and get a selfie. His star quality is such that both Djokovic and Mensik said Messi’s presence gave them inspiration during their matches. Murray was on a watching brief, having retired last summer, but he still took the opportunity to grab a photo with the legendary footballer. Posting the snap of the two of them in the locker room on Instagram , Murray deployed a classic football gag. “I asked him if he could do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke,” he joked. “He responded ‘cállate la boca’ which I think means yes in Spanish.” To save the Googling, “cállate la boca” actually translates as “shut your mouth”. His caption drew three laughing emojis from Djokovic, as well as 110,000 likes. Messi has made Miami his home since joining Inter Miami from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023. The 37-year-old former Barcelona forward is the captain of the Major League Soccer side and is the captain and star player of the David Beckham-owned franchise. He did not play for Argentina over the international break due to a minor injury, but made a telling impact for his club on Saturday, coming off the bench to score the winner in a 2-1 victory over Philadelphia, in a match which also saw his ex-Barca team-mates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba start. Like Murray, Djokovic was delighted to meet Messi. “I’m very glad, obviously, amazing to have him here, a great honour, a pleasure to play – I think for the first time – in front of him live,” he said after seeing off Gregor Dimitrov. “So I’m really grateful that he was here with his son and family. I’ve admired him, of course, like most of the world for most of his career, so it’s amazing that he keeps going. We’re actually the same age, born in 1987, so it’s quite nice to have him around. Meanwhile, Mensik joked that shaking Messi’s hand and not washing afterwards was the “key” to defeating Taylor Fritz in three sets. “I shook his hand,” he said. “I was kind of chilling with him a bit so I didn’t wash my hand before stepping on court.
