Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt both won Oscars for their roles in this top romantic comedy
Certificate: 15
In one of the finest performances of Jack Nicholson's career, the Hollywood legend excels as the cantankerous Melvin, an old novelist with obsessive-compulsive disorder. He uses soap bars only once to wash his hands, avoids stepping on pavement cracks and eats breakfast at the same table in the same restaurant to which he brings his own cutlery. Carol (Helen Hunt) is the only server he allows to wait on him, and the only server in the restaurant who can tolerate his bigoted behaviour.
Melvin, stuck in his habitual ways, is forced to face change after a near-fatal attack on his neighbour Simon (Greg Kinnear) leaves Melvin having to look after Simon's 'monkey-eared' dog Verdell.
As Good As It Gets is a romcom, although you wouldn't necessarily suspect it from that description. It also managed the trick of winning both lead acting awards at the Oscars, with Nicholson taking home Best Actor and Hunt winning Best Actress. The film was also nominated for Best Picture and is ranked 140th on Empire magazine's 'The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time' list. (138 minutes)
