Former Aston Villa favourite Ashley Young is closing in on his next club – despite passing 40. Versatile Young has completed his medical and has agreed terms on a one-season deal with relegated Ipswich Town. Young, who left Everton at the end of last season, has racked up over 750 career appearances in 22 years of professional football but isn't ready to call time on his playing career. Young has had two spells at Villa ; he first joined in 2006 under Martin O'Neill, before moving onto Manchester United in 2011 having made 190 appearances. He then returned in 2021 and worked under Dean Smith , Steven Gerrard and Unai Emery before returning north in 2023 to join Everton where he played 70 times across the last two seasons, According to Sky Sports Young had ‘a number of offers’ from Championship clubs, including Watford where he started his career. However, Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna convinced him having worked with Young at Old Trafford. Earlier this month he told Sky Sports: "I know I've turned 40, but it's not stopping me at all. I'm looking forward to what's next, as well, but I'm not hanging up my boots anytime soon. I'm ready to out there and play again. "Yeah, of course [I want to get out and train everyday still]. I've said for years now that I feel fitter now than I did when I was about 25. I owe a lot to [his Inter Milan boss] Antonio Conte for his lovely running sessions that he put us through! I'm feeling fit. I've been training and I don't feel like I'm ready to retire yet."
