Aussies go 1-2 in high jump at indoor world championships

Nicola Olyslagers has claimed a second straight women's high jump gold medal at the world indoor championships in Nanjing, edging out fellow Australian Eleanor Patteron on countback. Both Australians recorded a best clearance of 1.97m, with Olyslagers pocketing the gold as Patterson had missed once at 1.92m. World record holder and reigning Olympic gold medallist Yaroslava Mahuchikh from Ukraine (1.95m) claimed the bronze, also on countback. Olyslagers, 28, is accumulating quite the collection of high jump medals at global meets. In addition to her two world indoor crowns in Glasgow last year and now in Nanjing, she claimed silver at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics and was third at the 2023 world championships in Budapest. Patterson, meanwhile, added a second indoor silver to the one she snared behind Mahuchikh back in 2022. The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist also won gold and silver at the 2022 and 2023 outdoor worlds respectively. Patterson's attention now turns to the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne on Saturday, and said she is confident she can crack the 2m mark for the first time. "It's also such an incredible honour to win my fifth global medal," she said. "We keep changing the colours between Nicola, Yaroslava and myself, and hopefully later this year in Tokyo [at the outdoor World Athletics Championships], I can win my sixth." Mahuchikh is the only one of the three with wins at the Olympics, and outdoor and indoor world champs. The trio has dominated women's high jump in recent years, with at least two of them on the podium at every major global event since the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when Olyslagers (née McDermott) won silver and Mahuchikh bronze. Nanjing marks the third time in two years that all three have stood on the dais, with the 2023 outdoor worlds and last year's Olympics. Olyslagers and Patterson were both trying new run-ups in Nanjing, just as Mahuchikh did when she won gold in Paris. "I think we bring the best out of each other," Olyslagers said of her compatriot. "The Olympics was great, indoors is great. We're really going places as a sport." With one session remaining later on Sunday, Australia has already won a record five medals at the 2025 World Indoors, bettering the previous high-water mark of four set in Toronto in 1993. Lachlan Kennedy was second in the men's 60m and Jess Hull and Ky Robinson pocketed bronze in the two 3000m races.
