Balearic holiday island goat alert
@Source: majorcadailybulletin.com
In Menorca, it’s not a battle for a sun bed, it’s a battle with the goats! Residents of the Arenal d’en Castell area have complained to Es Mercadal Town Council about the proliferation of wild goats and the damage they cause to houses and vehicles, but they say the council’s response has been disappointing, as it claims that the matter does not fall within its remit. These residents claim that for months now a herd of about twenty goats has been roaming the residential area, sometimes causing traffic jams, as well as feeding on the grass and plants in their private and communal gardens and leaving excrement in the streets ‘which, by the way, no one cleans up’, they complain. But the last straw was when the animals, in search of tree leaves, climbed onto the roofs and bonnets of parked cars. ‘What will happen if a vehicle is damaged? Will the Town Council take responsibility?’ ask the residents of the residential area, who also warn that a goat could charge a pedestrian. On the other hand, they regret that until now all the damage to the landscaping has been paid for by the residents through the homeowners’ associations, and they demand ‘answers and action’ from the City Council to solve a recurring problem, that of the goats. And, in Mallorca, numerous groups of goats have been invading verges, roads and even private gardens in search of food and water, especially in the whole area between Camp de Mar and Puerto Andratx. Some homeowners have fenced off their gardens with to prevent these animals from destroying their gardens and plants. The vegetation in Mallorca supports surprisingly few land animals. The smallest include field mice, rats, rabbits and wood shrews while the largest are civet cats and a rare wild goat. The island is home to over 300 endemic species of animals, the most famous are the lizards that populate the island of Dragonera.
