Bay County prep roundup: Ties are fine but there’s nothing like a victory
@Source: mlive.com
BAY CITY, MI – A look at the high school sports scene in Bay County for April 25-27, 2025. Bay County coaches are asked to submit results, highlights and comments the night of each event by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com. SOCCER: FIRST WIN FOR PINCONNING Pinconning has had plenty of cause to celebrate this season. But it was high time for an all-out celebration. After playing a winning brand of soccer the past five games – but settling for four ties – the Spartans finally broke into the win column with a 2-1 victory over Unionville-Sebewaing Area. “I’m super proud of these girls for finally getting a win,” Pinconning coach Kaylee Meisner said. “They have been working so hard and playing so well. It’s well deserved. I’m hoping this will give them the confidence boost they need to get us through the rest of the season.” Pinconning, with a very unique record of 1-5-4, needed a strong second half to bring home win No. 1. Yarel Bustamante scored a first-half goal off a feed from Allison Fork, but USA countered to make it 1-1. With about 15 minutes left to play, Layla St. Peter converted a free kick from Josie Wieland into the game-winner. Ainesley Sylvester made the lead stand, registering 11 saves in goal for the Spartans. SOCCER: GLENN ON FIVE-GAME ROLL The hot streak continues for John Glenn as the Bobcats outbattled Flushing 2-1 for their fifth win in a row. Bella Snyder scored an early goal off a feed from Ella Wallaker for the quick 1-0 edge, but that’s how the game would remain until midway through the second half. Wallaker made it 2-0 after converting a pass from Addisyn Dodge, but Flushing quickly countered with a penalty-kick goal, keeping it dramatic to the finish. Glenn keeper Fiona Meisel registered two of her 12 saves in the final stages to preserve the win for Glenn (8-3-1). SOFTBALL: BATS ARE BOOMING FOR SPARTANS Pinconning bashed 33 hits, roaring past Tawas 13-0 and 11-4 in a non-conference doubleheader. Six batters delivered two or more hits in each game as the Spartans kept the hits coming. Elley Shoultes rapped four hits in Game 1 while Laken Gibala drove in four runs and joined Kailee Rugenstein with three hits. Layla Foco, Emma McQuarter and Ella Hunter each added two hits. Rugenstein added three more hits in Game 2 while Foco, McQuarter, Hunter, Emily Breza and Parker Ramsay had two apiece. McQuarter and Hunter notched complete-game victories in the pitching circle. SOFTBALL: GARBER WINS ONE IN TOURNEY Essexville Garber got out to a strong start at the Midland Dow Tournament but couldn’t keep it rolling, finishing with a 1-2 record. The Dukes drilled 14 hits to power past Traverse City West 10-0 in the opener, but the bats went cold in a 5-0 loss to the host team. J.J. Shooltz had two hits for Garber in that contest. Laingsburg handed Garber a 13-3 loss in the third game. Ava Wagner collected three hits while Ella Kokaly and Grace Zwetzig each added two for the Dukes (10-6). TENNIS: DOUBLES TEAM SHINES FOR BCC Aerabella Zavala Davis and Johanna Elder put the No. 1 in No. 1 doubles. The in-sync tandem came through again for Bay City Central, capturing the flight championship at the Lapeer Quad. The Wolves went 1-2 on the day, with a win over Flint Kearsley 5-3 and losses to Davison 6-2 and Lapeer 5-3. But Zavala Davis and Elder were a perfect pair, going 3-0 on the day for top honors. Central also got 2-1 records from No. 1 singles Lauren Klawon, No. 3 doubles Abby Schubert and Lauren Bontekoe and No. 4 doubles Lily Luptowski and Brielle Bailey. Edy Maciejewski added one win at No. 4 singles. BASEBALL: GLENN BREAKS EVEN AT TOURNEY John Glenn bounced back from a first-round loss to defeat Bay City Central 14-5, coming away with a 1-1 record at the Alma Invitational. Alma dealt Glenn a 9-5 defeat in the opener, despite a three-hit game at the plate from Hayden Ruff, who tripled and drove in a run for the Bobcats. Remington Ranck knocked an RBI double. The Bobcats ended on a high note with the win over Central, highlighted by a grand slam from Cameron Burch. Ruff raked three more hits for Glenn while Burch, Ranck and Jayden Brenay each added two. Ranck drove in two runs and Cameron Wilber knocked an RBI single to back winning pitcher Brenay. BASEBALL: NO LUCK FOR BCC AT TOURNEY Bay City Central went 0-2 at the Alma Invitational, dropping a 13-2 decision to Chesaning and a 14-5 decision to John Glenn. “Both games, regardless of scores, saw a lot of good things out of our pitching,” Central coach Brady Neitzel said. “A couple of kids got the opportunity to step on the mound who haven’t thrown this year. It was great to see them have confidence in themselves and earn more mound time in the future.” Sebastian McGill delivered two hits for the Wolves in the opener while Paulino Perez ripped three hits with two doubles in Game 2. Jose Costilla also doubled. BASEBALL: PINCONNING BATS HEAT UP Pinconning had its hitting in high gear, blasting its way to a 16-3 win over Tawas. The Spartans knocked 15 hits in the victory, getting a four-hit performance at the plate from Calvin Holland and a home run from Isaiah Hoffman. Pinconning (9-7) got two or more hits from six different batters in the win, with Holland, Hoffman, Ryan Kowalczyk, Landen Enciso, Zach Laures and Cole Dzurka each swinging a hot bat. Hoffman drove in five runs and Holland and Kowalczyk each added three RBIs. Enciso and Aidan Fork combined on a three-hitter for the win. Pinconning kept the runs coming in Game 2, leading 14-1 in the third inning before darkness halted play. Alex Shelagowski had three RBIs and Enciso three hits. GOLF: GLENN IS ALL-WEATHER TOUGH John Glenn tested its skills on challenging courses, against tough competition and in all kinds of weather conditions. The Bobcats finished 13th in the 24-team field at The Nightmare and The Dream Two-Day Tournament, highlighted by a Top 10 finish from freshman Mason Hayes. Weather went from the 70s on Friday to the 40s on Saturday and the Bobcats rolled with it. “Both days saw the Bobcats fire similar scores, even though The Dream plays tighter and the temps were 30 degrees colder,” Glenn coach Pete Remington said. “Proud of how they handled those temps today.” Hayes fired 78 at The Nightmare and 79 at The Dream for a two-round total of 157, good for 10th place. Logan Bitzer came in at 95-88 – 183, Hunter Piorkowski and Ethan Meyer posted matching scores of 91-95 – 186, Will Stopyak carded 93-96 – 189 and Blake Piorkowski went 103-105 – 208. TRACK: PANTHERS CLAIM INVITE TITLE The Standish-Sterling boys captured top honors in the large school division of The Hurd Invitational, the 17-team event hosted by Vassar. The Panthers claimed victory in four events, with Eli Cottrell winning the shot put (46-2), Graysen LaPan taking the pole vault (11-6) and Aiden Coggins claiming the 100 dash (11.38). The 4x100 relay team of Coggins, LaPan, Brody Sullivan and Tom Peistrack was first to the finish in 44.13.
