BAY CITY, MI – A look at the high school sports scene in Bay County for May 5, 2025. Bay County coaches are asked to submit results, highlights and comments the night of each event by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com.
BASEBALL: WESTERN RESPONDS AFTER SETBACK
No. 1-ranked Bay City Western responded to adversity like a champion.
But now it’s going to take a whole lot of resolve – and a little bit of help – for the Warriors to be champions.
Grand Blanc dealt Western a tough 4-0 defeat in Game 1 of their crucial Saginaw Valley League doubleheader, knocking the Warriors out of a tie for first place. But Western came back in impressive fashion, landing a 3-0 win in Game 2 to very much stay in the hunt.
After Western dropped the opener – despite a no-hit, 12-strikeout effort over five innings from Luke LaCourse – Jack Sequin gave the Warriors the exact follow-up performance they needed in the nightcap. The senior fired a complete-game one-hitter with 12 Ks. He carried a no-hitter for 6.1 innings.
“It’s a shame we came out of today with a split when our pitchers give up zero earned runs and strike out 25,” Western coach Tim McDonald said. “But we couldn’t push a run across in Game 1. We’ve got to be better offensively.”
Western (19-3, 13-3) is one game off the pace of SVL leaders Midland and Midland Dow, who play each other May 15. Western has three league doubleheaders remaining.
Grand Blanc took advantage of five Western errors to score four unearned runs in the opener, spoiling a gem from LaCourse. Sequin and Cal Plarske collected Western’s lone hits in the contest.
Sequin took care of business in Game 2, facing two batters over the minimum on the hill and delivering two hits at the plate. LaCourse had two hits while Sequin, Owen Dominowski and Talan Debo each delivered RBIs.
BASEBALL: EVERYTHING IS WORKING FOR COUGARS
No. 19-ranked Bay City All Saints is on some kind of roll.
The Cougars powered past Deckerville 15-3 and 18-1 in Big Thumb Conference Blue play, giving them a 12-game winning streak.
“The boys are really playing unselfish, team baseball over their current winning streak,” All Saints coach Brian Good said. “Everyone has adapted to a role on the team, which has really brought them a lot closer as a group.”
All Saints (15-2, 12-0) got a three-RBI performance from Drew Andrzejewski in Game 1 while Jeffrey Hartman drove in two runs and matched Bo Williams with two hits. Jack Wetters fanned nine in the win.
Wetters slammed four hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in three runs in Game 2. Sawyer Eager tallied four hits and Levi Johnson notched three RBIs. Andrzejewski fired a two-hitter with seven Ks for the win.
BASEBALL: PITCHING IS ON POINT FOR DUKES
Essexville Garber got back-to-back pitching gems, but the Dukes could only parlay that into one victory in a non-conference battle with Caro.
Garber captured the opener 2-0 behind a two-hit, 13-strikeout performance from Ethan Pett. Nathan Foret tripled and joined Alex Mularz with RBIs in the win as Garber scored one in the second and one in the fifth.
Garber (11-8-1) came through with no offensive support in Game 2, as Dakota Inda was the hard-luck loser despite firing a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Caro got a combined no-hitter with 10 Ks from Ramon Zamora and Landyn Stine. Xander Grice doubled and was brought home by Trentin Hessling in the third, good enough for a 1-0 victory for Caro.
BASEBALL: VICTORY ELUDES CENTRAL
Bay City Central played on near-equal terms with Mount Pleasant in the opener of their Saginaw Valley League clash before dropping a 3-2 decision.
Central (5-14, 5-7) took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run double by Joseph Gibson. But despite solid pitching from Cam Reed and Sebastian McGill, the Wolves couldn’t hold on. Mount Pleasant scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning.
The Oilers rolled to a 12-1 win in the nightcap to earn the sweep. Aaron Kain and Wyatt Stachowiak notched the lone hits for Central.
SOFTBALL: COUGARS SHAKE OFF TOUGH LOSS
Bay City All Saints dropped an extra-inning, 13-9 battle in Game 1 but had the fortitude to fight back for a 21-8 victory in Game 2 of the Big Thumb Conference Blue matchup.
“We lost a Game 1 in similar fashion earlier in the season and it carried over to Game 2,” All Saints coach Jason Proctor said. “Tonight the girls showed they learned from that and came out swinging to pick up a win in Game 2.”
Deckerville erupted for six runs in the eighth inning to snare the opener. Gali Costilla led All Saints with three hits while Sandy Leser had two hits and joined Clara Barrigar with two RBIs. Marin Proctor struck out 14 in the complete-game performance.
The Cougars (7-10, 5-3) countered for the big Game 2 victory, highlighted by a two-run home run by Barrigar. Kara Schular rapped three hits while Leser drove in three runs. Costilla added two hits and joined Natalie Huiskens with two RBIs to back winning pitcher Schular.
SOFTBALL: FINAL INNING STINGS CENTRAL
Mount Pleasant made its last swings count, defeating Bay City Central in the final inning in both ends of the Saginaw Valley League doubleheader.
Mount Pleasant broke loos for seven seventh-inning runs to win the opener 12-5. Alivia Kukla and Heidi Dahn each had four hits for Central while Eli Maciejewski added three. Kukla struck out eight in the circle.
In Game 2, Central rallied for two runs in the seventh to force extra innings only to fall 4-3. Izabelle Czuba drilled a run-scoring double and Dahn followed with a game-tying single for the Wolves in the seventh. Kali Kaczmarek led Central with three hits while Maleah Russell and Dahn added two. Katelyn Hemingway struck out eight in going the distance for the Wolves (5-10, 3-7).
SOFTBALL: TOUGH TWINBILL FOR WARRIORS
Bay City Western managed just two hits on the day, dropping 13-0 and 10-0 decisions to Grand Blanc in Saginaw Valley League action.
Leah Schumann delivered the lone hit for Western (9-11, 6-8) in Game 1 while Miranda French had the only hit in Game 2.
LACROSSE: WOLVES KEEP GOOD THING GOING
Bay City Central built on its historic stretch, downing L’Anse Creuse 12-5 to push its win total to a program-best nine on the season.
Max Miller and Byron Wilson each scored three goals for Central (9-4) while Kaiden DuRussel added two. Kobbe Ke, Maveric Anderson, Ethan Hubbard and John Britton all joined the scoring fun with one goal apiece.
Central hosts Bay City Western at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Engel Stadium.
TENNIS: CENTRAL SPOILS SHUTOUT
Bay City Central couldn’t contend with Hemlock, but the Wolves at least made a dent.
The Wolves denied Hemlock of a shutout, falling 7-1 but getting a nice win from Aerabella Zavala Davis and Johanna Elder at No. 1 doubles.
TENNIS: DOUBLES SHINE FOR GARBER
Essexville Garber had a strong day in the doubles flights but came up shy in a 5-3 bout with Saginaw Nouvel.
Sienna Sanchez and Lucy Houghteling, Aubree Gross and Addy Causley, and Justice Dawkins and Jessica Goik each registered wins for the Dukes.
GOLF: GARBER WINS BAY COUNTY BATTLE
Essexville Garber and Bay City Central cross paths quite often at practice at Bay County Golf Course.
But, on this day, it was game on.
The neighboring rivals, who both call Bay County their home course, waged a nine-hole duel on the back nine Monday. Garber came out with course bragging rights and a 159-177 victory.
Lucas Schiefer and Aaron Theisen shared medalist honors, each carding at 38 to pace Garber. Cass Walraven shot 41 and Jax Anderson 42 for the Dukes.
Central was led by Austin Wisenbach at 41. Jake Thompson came in at 42, Kaiden DuRussel 46 and Lucas Nieman 48 for the Wolves.
SOCCER: NEARMAN ON FIRE FOR GARBER
There was no stopping Avery Nearman and no containing the Garber Dukes.
Nearman poured in four goals to propel the Dukes to a 7-1 victory over Saginaw Swan Valley, moving closer to a sixth straight Tri-Valley Conference Red championship.
Iva Bebow came up big with two goals and an assist for Garber (11-1-1, 7-0-1). Emma Kelly notched a goal while Claire Arnold had two assists and Carly Arnold, Isla Anderson and Gabi Aguirre added one apiece.
SOCCER: GLENN ERUPTS AFTER HALFTIME
John Glenn was getting plenty of shots on goal.
Then the Bobcats began piling up the shots in goal.
After dueling Alma to a scoreless standoff in the first half, Glenn went wild for six second-half goals in a head-spinning 6-0 victory in Tri-Valley Conference Red action.
“The challenging wind, a block defense and an excellent effort by the Alma goalkeeper kept the game scoreless at halftime,” said Glenn coach Matt Kraft, whose team had 17 shots on goal in the first half. “But in the second half, Glenn was able to spread the defenders out, move the ball at will and find plenty of open lanes.”
Carli Johnson and Ella Wallaker each delivered two goals while Isabella Snyder added one score and freshman Quinn Lang tallied her first varsity goal. Wallaker and Snyder each registered three assists and Johnson two.
Fiona Meisel and Brayde Smith combined for the shutout in goal for Glenn (10-4-1, 5-2-1).
