The latest episode of Race Across The World has been dedicated to former contestant Sam Gardiner, who tragically lost his life in a car accident at the tender age of 24. The 24-year-old was behind the wheel of a white Volkswagen Golf R estate on the A34 in Gatley, Stockport, on Monday, May 26, when his vehicle suddenly swerved off the road , rolled over and came to rest on its side, according to Greater Manchester Police. The landscape gardener had participated in the second series of the BBC show alongside his mum Jo Gardiner in 2020, who expressed her devastation following the tragic incident. Wednesday's episode on June 4 of the fifth series on BBC One concluded with a tribute to Sam, displaying: "In loving memory of Sam Gardiner 2000-2025". The fatal accident occurred on May 26 and Sam sadly succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, May 29, as confirmed by his family, reports the Manchester Evening News . At the time, he had been employed on a remote estate on the west coast of Scotland and had returned to Manchester for a family gathering. Sam's mum Jo, who appeared in the 2020 series set in Mexico and Argentina, along with his dad Andrew, shared their devastation and vowed to "hold on to the memories that made him so special". They further described their son as "loyal, funny and fiercely protective", adding that he "brought warmth, laughter and a smattering of chaos wherever he went. He leaves behind a huge hole in our hearts". Police have confirmed the "single vehicle collision" and stated that the family is being "supported by specially trained officers". A representative from Race Across The World referred to him as having been an "integral part" of the show and extended their "deepest condolences to his parents, Andrew and Jo; his brothers, William and Charlie; his step mum Justine; his family and friends". The statement further expressed that: "Everyone who worked with him and indeed everyone who watched Sam could see just how precious and transformative the trip was for both him and his mum, Jo. "Sam wholeheartedly embarked on the seven-week journey with an energy, love and a determination that enabled the pair to indulge in thrilling experiences across Mexico to Argentina, captivating audiences who fell in love with them and their exceptional bond." Throughout their time on Race Across The World, Sam and Jo aimed to cross South America quicker than the other contestants, with limited funds and no access to mobile phones. Although the pair was unable to finish the challenge, Sam described the experience as having a profound impact on his life. During filming, Sam shared: "Mum and I are very close - we often think or say the same things. She has travelled a lot in her life, so I think it would be fun to do it with her."
