Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) chairman Adi Narayan has defended the process used in releasing three boxers to fight in New Zealand and Australia.
The boxers Sireli Navua, Ronesh Prasad and Jonasa Kavika suffered knockout losses in the weekend
“The commission was diligent with their process in releasing three local boxers for international bouts,” Narayan told SUNsports yesterday.
Isireli Navua was knocked out in the first round by New Zealand’s Sonny Moroni in Auckland. Prasad, who according to Box Rec, had already lost his two professional fights, was knocked out in the second round by New Zealand boxer Zain Adams.
Kavika lost his bout to Matt Lodge in Australia on Sunday night.
“We are very careful in releasing these boxers but these two were young and mostly they are going down there to get some experience,” Narayan said.
“Zain Adams is a ranked boxer in New Zealand and our young kid (Prasad) here is just not big enough.
“We thought that maybe it was a chance for him to learn something not realising that he was going to hit the floor in the second round.”
Narayan said the commission may have overlooked the strength of the overseas opponents.
“But that’s the way it happened, we can always learn from mistakes. We get better as we move forward.”
Narayan revealed that there would be four more boxing programmes for the year.
“We have another Bluewater Boxing Promotion in May,” he said.
“We have a new promoter that would have his programme in July. He has already booked a venue and has one big main bout, which will feature overseas opponents.”
Narayan added that Bluewater Boxing Promotion would have two more programmes set for September and November.
