Students at The Berkeley Institute got a feel for international languages and culture last month.
A statement said the school’s foreign language week from March 24 to 28 centred on the theme “languages take you places”.
A trivia challenge on Monday kicked off the week’s activities, followed by the “language Olympics”, which included a spelling bee, jump rope and musical chairs, in the school’s courtyard on Tuesday.
Students tasted cuisine from countries such as India, Jamaica and Grenada on Wednesday and watched foreign language films on Thursday.
The statement explained: “On Friday, the week concluded with a vibrant cultural fair and fashion show in the Courtyard.
“Highlights included high-energy performances of salsa, bachata, merengue and axé, a moving recital of French poetry, a traditional piñata breaking and a powerful performance by a student Gombey dance group.”
An old-school versus new-school dance-off between teachers and students ended the week’s festivities.
The statement added that the festivities were “a reminder that at The Berkeley Institute, languages not only teach us how to speak, they take us places”.
