A bill has been introduced to rename the Ramona post office after Archie Moore, the late boxing legend who trained other boxers at his gym in the community.
Moore, who fought for over four decades, retired with a final record of 186 wins, 23 losses and 10 draws, with 131 official knockouts.
He boxed, and later trained, the likes of Muhammad Ali at “Archie Moore’s Salt Mine” in Ramona at the foot of Mt. Woodson.
Rep. Darrell Issa’s bill, H.R. 4982, would name the post office at 1444 Main St. after Moore. He called Moore “both a regional and national treasure whose public service and legendary sports accomplishments should never be forgotten.

“For decades, “The Mongoose” commanded the heights of the sports world and then dedicated himself to Ramona and the region, especially through his youth foundation, Any Body Can,” Issa continued. “I am proud to join with the Moore family and the extraordinary Ramona community to forever honor Archie Moore’s life and legacy here in Southern California.”
The congressman, R-Escondido, announced the bill Tuesday at the Ramona MMA Center with owner Kevin Hosseini, Moore’s children, Billy and J’Marie Moore, Department of Housing and Urban Development Regional Administrator William T. Spencer and former Rep. Duncan Hunter, Sr.
“Ramona played an integral part in [Moore’s] life,” said his son, president and CEO of the Any Body Can Youth Foundation. “On behalf of the entire ABC Youth Foundation, we thank [Issa] for his consideration of renaming the post office after Archie Moore.”
Moore was born in 1913 in Benoit, Mississippi and raised in St. Louis. He became a professional boxer in 1935 and earned the light heavyweight title. He boxed until he was 50, retiring from the sport in 1963 after facing such adversaries as Ali (then Cassius Clay) and Rocky Marciano.

A Black man, Moore faced discrimination in Jim Crow America during his lengthy career.
Following retirement from boxing, he created his foundation to assist underprivileged children to “learn life skills, emphasizing self-discipline, confidence, and resilience, through the sport of boxing,” according to a statement from Issa’s office.
President Ronald Reagan appointed Moore to work in HUD to develop Project Build, teaching boxing to youth all over California.
Boxing magazine The Ring has ranked Moore as its fourth greatest of all time, and website BoxRec lists him as their third best pound-for-pound boxer of all time.
In his retirement, Moore became involved in the civil rights movement. He also acted in several movies and television shows. Moore died in San Diego in 1998 at the age of 85.
“Here at Ramona MMA Center, we teach the same values Archie Moore lived by, discipline, respect, and giving kids a positive path forward,” said Hosseini. “Honoring him by renaming the Ramona Post Office is a powerful reminder for our youth that greatness comes from hard work and giving back to the community.”
