BirdStock gets grant funding to help pay for 2024 festival, plus a date for 2025

BirdStock landed grant funding to help pay for last year’s event, and it has a date for 2025. The annual free music festival in Bird Rock assembles merchants and musicians, and last year included pickleball, miniature golf, balloon animals and bounce houses. It also marked the first time La Jolla Boulevard was closed for the event. Bird Rock Community Council President Joe Terry announced at the group’s April 8 meeting that it had secured a $10,000 special-event grant for last year’s BirdStock. The grant type, initiated by state Sen. Toni Atkins before she left office last fall, is administered by the city of San Diego in partnership with the area’s Business Improvement District, or BID, Alliance. BRCC also plans to submit a grant application for BirdStock 2025, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25. The funding, Terry told the La Jolla Light, helps cover costs for musicians, street closures and insurance. It also means additional money can go toward the Bird Rock Foundation, which supports Bird Rock Elementary School. Other BRCC news Sign and lighting projects: BRCC has long discussed the possibility of installing Bird Rock monument signs along La Jolla Boulevard. But recently, updates on the project seemingly have stalled. The project would consist of two monuments — each consisting of a large boulder with one or two pelican statues on top. Four details remain unresolved: the number of pelicans per monument, the size of the pelicans and boulders, their color and whether they will be accompanied by the words “Welcome to Bird Rock,” “Bird Rock” or no message. Backers are awaiting guidance from the city of San Diego on the size of the boulders and pelicans. Before the project can move to the city Department of Development Services, it must go before the Department of Cultural Affairs, according to Terry, who said that is unlikely to happen until June. Another project — to install lighting fixtures on trees along La Jolla Boulevard — is further along, though no timetable was given for its completion. The BRCC board voted unanimously Nov. 20 to buy 72 color-programmable uplighting fixtures for 36 trees. The group’s lighting contractor is working with city staff to obtain permits to install the fixtures. History of Bird Rock: BRCC Vice President Joe Parker delivered a second batch of Bird Rock history at the April 8 meeting. Parker’s “5 Minutes of Bird Rock” segment started last month in an effort to promote community engagement. To contribute photos and other historical items to the initiative, email jparker@parkerlegalgrp.com. Newsletter soon?: Terry reiterated his hope that BRCC’s newsletter will resume “soon” and that the return edition will serve as a prototype of sorts. The upcoming newsletter will be the first since board member Barbara Dunbar stepped down from assembling and organizing the bimonthly editions. With the help of Oscar “Oz” Riveros of local digital marketing and advertising group The Lead Wolf, the newsletter will be ”principally electronic.” Kristin Barret, a six-year BRCC board member with a professional background in brand design and marketing, previously told the Light that she is intent on enhancing the Community Council’s digital presence. Next meeting: The Bird Rock Community Council next meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Bird Rock Elementary School, 5371 La Jolla Hermosa Ave. Learn more at birdrockcc.org. ♦
