Birmingham City player ratings vs Stevenage after Cochrane belter crowns Blues centurions
@Source: birminghammail.co.uk
Birmingham City smashed through 100 points on their crusade to the Championship with a 1-0 victory over Stevenage. Substitute Alex Cochrane scored the deciding goal with the first of his Blues career 15 minutes from time. Blues will be crowned League One champions after their final home match against Mansfield on Sunday and this victory means they will break the third tier’s points record with one more win. Alfie May, who captained the side on his return to the starting XI, had the first chance to score at the Lamex Stadium. Taylor Gardner-Hickman’s cross from the right was controlled by Keshi Anderson but the winger couldn’t find the angle for a shot so he teed up May who curled just wide of goal with his left foot. Gardner-Hickman should have put Blues ahead on the 30-minute mark. Luke Harris’ left-wing delivery fell kindly to Gardner-Hickman eight yards from goal but he blazed wildly over the crossbar when the goal was gaping. Blues didn’t have it all their own way in the first half and Marc Leonard almost let Stevenage in just before the interval. Fortunately for Leonard, Stevenage didn’t realise Ryan Allsop was out of position and dallied on the ball before being snuffed out. Chris Davies shook his head in disbelief on the touchline at Leonard’s lax pass. Leonard made amends after the break to orchestrate an incisive Blues move that resulted in an attempt by Harris that was blocked behind for a corner. Davies made three changes for the final quarter with Tomoki Iwata, Jay Stansfield and Willum Willumsson all introduced. Cochrane followed soon after in place of the impressive debutant Lee Myung-jae. And it was Cochrane of all people who broke the deadlock. A Blues corner was cleared as far as Cochrane and the ex-Hearts man lashed the ball into the bottom corner from 25 yards. ‘A hundred points, hundred points, Birmingham City, playing football the Davies way’ rang around the away end for the final 15 minutes. For the first time in Blues’ history, they are centurions. Ryan Allsop 7 Allsop had a fairly relaxing evening on his way to a 19th League One clean sheet of the season. The goalkeeper bailed out Dowell after one overhit first half back-pass and made a good stop from White in stoppage time. Taylor Gardner-Hickman 7 Gardner-Hickman missed a sitter in the first half after arriving from right-back to fire over from eight yards. The 23-year-old was solid in his defensive work and produced some accurate crosses from the right. Grant Hanley 7.5 Hanley is quicker than he looks and performed solidly again on his second start in four days. The Scotland international was constantly communicating at the back and displays natural leadership skills. Ben Davies 8 Every long ball from Stevenage was met by Davies’ head. The centre-back was comfortable on the ball and played a crucial part in another clean sheet. Lee Myung-jae 8 The South Korean left-back was well positioned, strong in the tackle and adept in possession on his first start for Blues. A very good debut. Marc Leonard 6 Some of Leonard’s passing in the first half was poor and one loose ball just before half-time left Chris Davies shaking his head in disappointment. The Scot was sharper in the second half and played his part in some purposeful passages of play before being substituted. Paik Seung-ho 7.5 Paik was a driving force in the second half with some marauding runs through midfield. He displayed excellent footwork at times and looked threatening when he combined with Anderson and Stansfield down the left. Kieran Dowell 7 Dowell produced a lovely dummy to set up a good chance for Iwata late on and was generally neat and tidy in his play, other than a strange ball back to Allsop early on. Luke Harris 6 One cut-back from the left created a gilt-edged chance for Gardner-Hickman in the first half but Harris was the quietest of Blues’ starting front four. Keshi Anderson 6.5 Anderson picked up possession in some promising positions but he wasn’t at his best. He flew away from Wildin early in the second half before being upended for a free-kick in a good position. Alfie May 6.5 May set the tone for the press and chased a few lost causes. He was starved of service after an early miss. Tomoki Iwata (for Leonard, 67) 6 The Japanese midfielder could have netted from the edge of the box late on but Blues didn’t need a second goal. Willum Willumsson (for Harris, 67) 6 Willumsson should have pulled the trigger when found in space inside the penalty area late on but he waited too long. Jay Stansfield (for Anderson, 67) 7 Stansfield had the beating of Stevenage down Blues’ left and got in constantly during an electric cameo off the bench. It was a shame he couldn’t add to his goals tally. Alex Cochrane (for Lee, 72) 7 It was fitting that one of Blues’ most consistent and underrated players scored the goal that took them past 100 points. Cochrane has been excellent this season and deserves his moment. Lukas Jutkiewicz (for May, 78) 6 The veteran striker appeared to be in pain late on but battled on for his team.
