@Source: birminghammail.co.uk
Tens of thousands of music and sports fans will descend on Birmingham at the same time next month as some of the biggest events in the city's cultural calendar fall on the same weekend. On July 4, 5 and 6, in what is being dubbed Birmingham's 'Super Weekend', hotels in and around the city centre are expected to be fully-booked, bars and pubs will be anticipating a boost in revenue and Brummies are bound to notice more traffic on the roads. Three of the city's biggest venues are expected to reach full capacity as people travel from all over the world to watch music legends make history and catch some of the best sports players in the world in action. Ozzy Osbourne will perform his last ever gig on Saturday, July 5 in what will be the first time that the original band – Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward – have played together in 20 years. They'll be joined by other metal icons like Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Pantera, as well as stars from bands like Aerosmith, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Guns N Roses, and host of the event, Hollywood favourite Jason Momoa. More than 125,000 fans queued online for the general sale back in February as huge demand resulted in most tickets selling out on Ticketmaster within 16 minutes. Villa Park has a capacity of around 40,000 and even some diehard fans who missed out on tickets have said they still plan on being in Birmingham on the day, when several Black Sabbath-themed events are expected to take place across the city. Another Birmingham band to find international success, Jeff Lynne's ELO, will also be bidding farewell to fans with two final performances on July 5 and 6 at the Utilita Arena . The old NIA has a capacity of 15,800 and the Mr Blue Sky hitmakers received 'phenomenal demand' for their hometown Over and Out tour shows when tickets went on sale in the autumn. Completing the trio of big music events, Birmingham's BP Pulse Arena will be hosting Billy Ocean for his greatest hits show on July 5. Tickets were still available , priced from £36.50, at the time of writing, but the event has the potential to hold up to 15,685 people. Over in Edgbaston , two of the best cricket teams in the world will be competing in the England vs India Men's Test Match throughout that week, drawing crowds on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Super Weekend. Already, ticket availability is low for the Friday and Saturday matches, meaning Edgbaston Stadium is likely to be packed with as many as 25,000 fans each day. Meanwhile, in the city centre, the Colmore Food Festival is expected to attract 30,000 foodies to Victoria Square on July 4 and 5 for its biggest edition yet. The award-winning festival will bring together the best food and drink traders from across the district, with stalls selling a huge selection of meat, vegetarian and vegan options alongside wines, beers, cocktails and soft drinks. The line-up of events has the potential to bring an extra 200,000 visitors to Birmingham in one weekend, so there's sure to be a buzz about the place. Locals will also be able to take part in the action, even if they're not on the guest list for one of the main attractions, as smaller venues across the city are planning their own special events for fans, which BirminghamLive will be sharing details about closer to the time.
