Bishop’s wins Division III title in boys golf; baseball and softball playoffs get underway

The spring postseason continues for several high school sports as the school year winds down. Here’s what’s been happening for the three La Jolla schools.
The Bishop’s School captured the CIF San Diego Section Division III team championship at La Jolla’s Torrey Pines Golf Course on May 21. The two-day tournament began May 19 at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul.

Boys baseball
La Jolla Country Day
The Torreys, the Coastal League champions in the regular season, opened the San Diego Section playoffs May 20 as the sixth seed in Division I against No. 11 Scripps Ranch and came away with a 6-0 victory.
Country Day advanced to the second round the next day against No. 3 Point Loma, which had a first-round bye, and won again, this time 2-1, to move on to a third-round match-up on the road against second-seeded Cathedral Catholic at 4 p.m. Friday, May 23.
La Jolla High
La Jolla, seeded sixth in the Division III playoffs, defeated No. 11 Westview 2-0 in the first round on May 20.
The Vikings fell in the second round to No. 3 Clairemont 3-2 on May 21.
However, they’ll get another chance to keep their season alive when they host in-town rival Bishop’s at 4 p.m. May 23.
The Knights entered the Division III playoffs as the seventh seed and defeated No. 10 Imperial 3-2 in the first round May 20.
They then took on No. 2 University City and dropped an 8-7 decision May 21.
Bishop’s will try to stay alive in the playoffs on the road against rival La Jolla High at 4 p.m. May 23.
Girls softball
Bishop’s, the No. 3 seed in the Division IV playoffs, routed No. 6 Montgomery 11-0 in the first round May 21.
Next up for the Knights is second-seeded Mission Bay on the road at 4 p.m. May 23.
La Jolla High
The Vikings opened the Division V playoffs as the No. 2 seed by rolling over No. 7 High Tech San Diego 13-1 on May 21.
La Jolla next will host No. 3 Southwest High at 4 p.m. May 23.
Swimming and diving
In the CIF San Diego Section Division II championships this month, La Jolla High captured two titles and all three local schools had notable achievements:
La Jolla High
Brody Layson won the boys individual 1-meter diving title, while the Vikings also came out on top in the girls 200-yard freestyle relay.
In addition, Will Quesnell took second place in the boys 50-yard freestyle, Astrid Egan was third in the girls 50-yard freestyle and Nathan Thomson place third in the boys 500-yard freestyle.
The Knights were runners-up in the overall boys team rankings, behind Sage Creek, while also finishing second in the boys 200-yard freestyle relay.
Cap Lightner took second place in the boys 100-yard backstroke.
La Jolla Country Day
Tillie McIntyre took second place in girls 1-meter diving for the Torreys.

The CIF San Diego Section gymnastic championships are set for Friday, May 23, at West Hills High School, and the San Diego Section championships in track and field will be Saturday, May 24, at Mount Carmel High School. ♦
