Ghana's Black Princesses will take on Tunisia in the second round of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup qualifiers after receiving a bye in the first round. Tunisia progressed after narrowly overcoming Togo with a 3-2 aggregate victory, winning 2-1 at home and drawing 1-1 away.
Currently training at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, Head Coach Charles Sampson is optimistic about his team’s chances in the upcoming tie.
“Now our focus has gone to the game between Tunisia because now we know our opponents,” he said. “I have watched the game that they played in Togo 1-1 and then home in Tunisia they won 2-1. It was a tight game too.
So now we know how they also play. Now it's about us to watch the game and analyze it well and see how we can prepare ourselves to be ahead of them in September."
Coach Sampson revealed plans for two training camps, one in July and another in early August, to fine-tune the squad ahead of the September showdown.
He mentioned that new players have been invited to test different roles as the technical team continues to build and refine the squad. “We believe that in those times we will get the team polished. We've got some new players in this week just for us to try some positions that we are still looking for,” he explained.
In his quest to bolster the squad, Coach Sampson is also attending middle league matches to scout for talent that can fill specific gaps. “It’s positive.
We are strengthening the team in every department that we think we are a bit lacking,” he added.
Ghana will travel to Tunisia for the first leg of the qualifier before hosting the return leg, as they aim to secure a spot in their eighth consecutive FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
