Connie Chan’s experience did not concern Sera Bolatini when they fought on Saturday night under the Zeg Kings Boxing Promotion.
Bolatini, 24, created history by winning the WBA (World Boxing Association) super welterweight Oceania title; first Fijian woman to do so.
The Vuma, Ovalau, Lomaiviti woman won by unanimous point against Chan at the Vodafone Arena, Suva.
The rugby player turned boxer was grateful for the support of her coach Osea Nanovu, her Boxing Brave Club and her family.
“I made some side steps to distract her and also to tire her out – those were some skills I did,” she said following her victory on Saturday night. .
“I thank God for His plans on me and for this win.
“Before I walked into the ring I knew I would win this fight as my coach told me before the match. If he believed that I’d be able to it then I must deliver.
“I do thank my parents, Navitalai Seu and Laisani Leba, who were present; it was their first time to watch me fight.”
Bolatini, who switched from rugby to boxing, lost both her first two bouts.
She said she took the positive learnings from it and worked on it before she fought for her first title.
Asked what her plan is regarding her next fight, Bolatini said: “I’ll leave it to God and His plans.”
Bolatini is a former Fijiana 7s squad member and Fijiana Drua player.
Meanwhile, her father Navitalai Seu said they believed in her in whatever sport she played.
“She is always soft spoken but she is talented; she staretd with athletics, went on to rugby and now boxing.
“We are proud of her; proud moment for our family being the first to achieve this in boxing.”
