Boys golf Top 20, April 18: Top team solidifies top spot, changes throughout

The tee box: Three tournament team wins in the Garden State Cup, FDU Invitational, and the inaugural Green Knights Invitational. Junior Michael Asselta, a 2024 NJ.com First Team All-State selection and older brother of freshman teammate Rory Asselta won his first tourney of the season at the Green Knights by shooting a 3-over 74. The younger Asselta has both of the other two individual wins. In blustery conditions Wednesday at their host tourney, the Green Knights topped 14 programs, including four within last week’s top five and seven in last week’s Top 20. Legit, loaded, and look out. Next up: Blue Devils Invitational, Monday; at Bergen Catholic Tuesday, vs. Northern Highlands, Wednesday. LW: 1. The tee box: The defending state champion and last year’s No. 1 team participated in their first tournament of the season at the Green Knights Invitational Wednesday. The Green Wave (329) finished in a tie for sixth with Westfield (329), host of Monday’s upcoming Blue Devils Invitational at Echo Lake Country Club. Mulligan given. Look for a bounce back effort next week with another shot at the top team. Next up: Blue Devils Invitational, Monday; at Montville, Monday; vs. Shawnee, Tuesday; vs. Chatham, Wednesday. LW: 2. The tee box: After their inaugural Atlantic County Championships win on April 8, the Mustangs have rattled off eight straight dual match wins. Throw in top three finishes in the Wildcat Invitational (2nd) and the Garden State Cup (3rd) over the last three weeks, the Mustangs have kept their momentum. Next up: Tri-match with Egg Harbor, Lower Cape May, April 28. LW: 3. The tee box: The Monmouth County champs travelled 90 minutes up north to New York and tied with Bergen Catholic for third place (319), four strokes behind No. 1 St. Joseph (Mont.) at the Green Knights Invitational Wednesday. Solid showing with senior Jack O’Connor shooting 5 over 76 to finish runner-up. First-year head coach Patrick Reynolds has CBA back to where they want to be. Next up: at Freehold Township, Monday; at Shore Conference Tournament, Wednesday. LW: 4. The tee box: Three tournaments played, improvement in all: Garden State Cup (7th), FDU Invitational (two-way tie for 5th with rival Don Bosco Prep), Green Knights Invitational (two-way tie for second with No. 4 CBA). Throw in a 157-158 dual match win against the Ironmen on April 14 and the Crusaders are making huge strides. Next week: at Blue Devils Invitational, Monday; vs. No. 1 St. Joseph (Mont.), Tuesday; vs. Ramapo, Wednesday; vs. Ridgewood, April 24; at Red Devils Invitational, April 25. LW: 16. The tee box: Finished fourth at Green Knights Invitational (3 strokes behind No. 5 Bergen Catholic, No. 4 CBA and 7 strokes in back of No. 1 St. Joseph (Mont.)). Solid performance by the Norsemen. Next up: at Pascack Valley, Monday; vs. Fort Lee, Wednesday. LW: 10. The tee box: Finished fifth at Green Knights Invitational on April 16, one stroke ahead of defending state champ Delbarton and Westfield. Tied CBA for first in the Monmouth County Tournament on April 9, only to lose on a fifth golfer tie breaker. Next up: at Blue Devils Invitational, Monday; vs. Monmouth, Tuesday; at Shore Conference Tournament, Wednesday; vs. Bernards, Thursday. LW: 5. The tee box: Finished fifth at the Garden State Cup and fourth at the FDU Invitational. Looking for senior and Rutgers-bound Harry Cohen to have a solid couple of weeks coming up. Next up: at No. 5 Bergen Catholic, Wednesday. LW: 11. The tee box: Won Wildcat Invitational, placed 11th at Garden State Cup, came back with a runner-up finish in the Ocean County Tournament. Undefeated in dual matches. Next up: at Shore Conference Tournament, Wednesday. LW: NR. The tee box: Finished third at the Monmouth County Tournament to No. 4 CBA and No. 5 Ranney. Junior Ryan Quigley too home individual medalist honors, becoming the first Holmdel golfer ever to win the MCT. Next up: at Red Bank Catholic, April 21; at Shore Conference Tournament, Wednesday. LW: 6. The tee box: Runner-up finish to No. 1 St. Joseph (Mont.) at the FDU Invitational. Dropped first dual match of season to Ramapo on April 10. Next up: vs. Indian Hills, Monday; at St. Joseph (Mont.), Wednesday; at Old Tappan, Friday. LW: 7. The tee box: Tied with Holmdel for ninth at Garden State Cup and tied with defending state champion Delbarton for sixth at tough Green Knights Invitational. Next two weeks will be a test especially as host of the 20th Blue Devils Invitational at Echo Lake CC on Monday. Next up: Hosting Blue Devils Invitational Monday; at Cranford, April 24; at Red Devil Invitational, April 25. LW: NR. The tee box: Tied with rival Bergen Catholic for fifth in the FDU Invitational and then lost to them by one stroke on the road on April 14. Lost by four strokes to St. Joseph (Mont) on April 3. Next week: at Blue Devils Invitational, Monday. LW: 15. The tee box: Finished eighth at the Garden State Cup and after a one stroke road loss at Livingston on April 3, have won six straight dual matches. Get the feeling they are preparing for May. Next week: at Blue Devils Invitational, Monday; vs. Verona, Tuesday; vs. Montclair, Wednesday. LW: 17. The tee box: Placed fourth in the Monmouth County Tournament in one of the strongest fields of the year to date. Ten dual match wins on the season as well. Next up: vs. Freehold Township, Tuesday; at Shore Conference Tournament, Wednesday; vs. Colts Neck, Thursday. LW: 9. The tee box: Finished second to then-No. 8 Bridgewater-Raritan at the Cougar Classic Cherry Valley Invitational; followed up with a win at the Mountain Ridge Invitational one week later. Next up: at Ridge, Tuesday; vs. North Hunterdon, Wednesday; vs. Bridgwater-Raritan, Thursday; at Red Devils Invitational, Friday. LW: 12. The tee box: Upended Pingry by nine strokes and Ridge by 10 strokes to take home the Cougar Classic Cherry Valley Invitational. Since then, the Panthers have dropped three straight dual matches. Next up: at North Hunterdon, Tuesday; at Pingry, Thursday; at Red Devils Invitational, Friday. LW: 8. The tee box: Finished fourth at Garden State Cup and after their first dual match loss of the season, a 151-145 road loss at Shawnee on April 10, have won three straight dual matches.
