Brett Gardner and his wife Jessica remembered their son Miller in a touching obituary after the 14-year-old died during a family trip to Costa Rica. In an obituary in the Post and Courier, the Gardner family said that Miller Mack Gardner was an "active" eighth grader at his school in Charleston, South Carolina, where he played football and junior varsity baseball. He was also a member of the honor roll, his family shared. "The void Miller's passing leaves in the hearts of his family, friends, teammates, teachers, coaches and others will be felt for years," the Gardners said in the obituary, adding that their family will "forever cherish the places they visited, the people they met, the friends they made, and the memories they created together." "Miller's time here with them was brief but his spirit will carry on forever through those who were impacted by the way he lived," the obituary continued, revealing Miller's love of hobbies including golf, fishing, hunting and "traveling to new places with his family." "Miller was so blessed with experiences and friendships in his 14 years, and he would want other children to have the opportunity to create their own wonderful memories." The family said that because of Miller's generous nature, they are asking for any memorial donations to be made in Miller's honor to The Make-A-Wish Foundation. "The Gardners have seen the organization's impact firsthand on numerous occasions and have always been deeply moved by the hope, strength, and inspiration each wish provides for children and families facing difficult times," they said in the obituary. "In this time of unimaginable loss, the family prays that joy and healing will come to others who share their grief," they added. The family also acknowledged the "first cousins and many extended family members who considered him their own and will miss his smile that brought joy to all," in the obituary. A private celebration of life for Miller will be held "at a later date" for just family and close friends, according to the Post and Courier. Miller's body was released to his parents by the local medical examiner's office on Wednesday, March 26, a Costa Rican Judicial Investigations Police confirmed to PEOPLE following his sudden death while the family was vacationing at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort. A cause of death is not yet known, but an official previously confirmed to PEOPLE that they had ruled out asphyxiation. Samples have been sent to histology, toxicology and neuropathology labs for further testing, and results are expected in two to three months, the official said.
