Brett Goldstein compares reviving “Ted Lasso ”for season 4 to resurrecting a dead cat: 'We had a funeral'

Reviving the Apple TV+ hit Ted Lasso for a surprise fourth season reminds writer and star Brett Goldstein of the resurrection of a "dead" cat.
The actor behind the gruff but lovable Roy Kent shared a purrfectly eccentric analogy about the show's return on a recent episode of NPR's Wild Card podcast.
“I have a friend that I went to university with, and I think about this a lot," he said. "He had a cat that died. He loved his cat. And the cat was run over, and they buried the cat. He was a child. They buried the cat in the garden, and he lay in bed so sad, so upset and crying, and he prayed and he wished, ‘I wish the cat would come back.’"
"And then the cat did come back, and it turned out the cat they buried wasn’t their cat," Goldstein added. "I think about that all the time. I’m like, no wonder this guy is f---ed in the head, because he thinks death isn’t real, so of course he’s insane. He’s such a weird guy 'cause he thinks he can bring things back from the dead."

Goldstein said the resurrection of the show felt very much like the "resurrection" of that cat. "I guess I’m saying I feel like that kid," Goldstein said. "Like, we buried it. We all cried, we had a funeral. Are you saying we can bring anything back?’ It’s too much power.”
Goldstein confirmed that he's already in the writers' room for the fourth season, which picked up a renewal last summer despite co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis initially pitching the show for just a three-season arc. Goldstein and Sudeikis are expected to reprise their roles, as are Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Brendan Hunt, and Juno Temple.
Sudeikis confirmed last month that the new season will follow his titular character, an optimistic American football coach hired to manage a British soccer team, as he coaches a women's team.
"We're writing season 4 now," Sudeikis told brothers Jason and Travis Kelce on their New Heights podcast, remaining mum about further plot points and quipping when asked if Ted will return to the states: "That's too many questions."
