Brian O’Driscoll tips surprise British and Irish Lions captaincy call as Andy Farrell faces massive decision

RUGBY legend Brian O'Driscoll has revealed who he reckons will captain the British and Irish Lions on their Tour of Australia later this summer.
2025 Lions boss Andy Farrell is set to announce his captain and squad on stage at London’s sold-out O2 Arena for the tour of Australia.
The announcement is set to come just days after the European Champions Cup semi-finals.
Icon Brian O’Driscoll believes that Leinster captain Caelan Doris may NOT get the nod as skipper of the touring side.
O’Driscoll, who featured on four Lions tours and captained the side in New Zealand in 2005 spoke with The Times as an HSBC ambassador.
The Dublin native suggested that England lock Maro Itoje could now have the edge.
BOD said: “I thought Caelan would be, but there’s a good chance it could be Itoje now.
"It’s unlikely to be [the Wales flanker] Jac Morgan, as you can’t guarantee him a starting place because there are a lot of back-rowers.
"I think Jac Morgan will go, but Maro — I’ve been impressed with him. He’s quietly gone about his business. He’s got the presence and he’s going to start, which is important for your Test captain.
"Maybe it takes a bit of pressure off other selections for Faz. If he did lean towards the tried and tested with Ireland players, maybe it gives a different complexion with an English captain.
"I think Maro would be a great captain.”
O'Driscoll insisted that the decision comes down to the Ireland or England skipper for the role.
He added: “I thought he’d go with someone he knew in Doris. He’s new to captaincy, and I know Maro is too, but he’s got experience and miles on the clock.
"It’s a close-run thing. It’ll certainly be between the two of them. Faz has spoken about five or six guys [on his captaincy shortlist] . . . no. It’ll be between two.”
Itoje has more Lions experience than his Irish counterpart after being involved in 2017 and 2021 touring squads.
While Doris has yet to don the famous jersey.
