Brisbane Olympics 2032 LIVE updates: Queensland government set to reveal venue plan
@Source: smh.com.au
After a Monday morning press conference in Canberra where Anthony Albanese announced a big bucket of money for Queensland state schools — and joked about sharing cannoli with fellow Italian-Australian leader David Crisafulli — the prime minister was quizzed about Olympic funding on Brisbane drivetime radio.
He told ABC Radio Brisbane’s Ellen Fanning yesterday that he’d had “preliminary discussions” with the Queensland government, but that he wouldn’t preempt today’s announcement. “I’ll wait and see,” he said.
Pressed on whether Labor was ready to renegotiate a deal that had previously allocated $2.5 billion for a Brisbane arena, Albanese agreed the federal government wanted to be able to point to “a legacy for Commonwealth dollars”.
“We will discuss issues in good faith. But we’re very clear that we want a legacy from the Commonwealth’s contribution and that Brisbane 2032 will be an important moment in Queensland’s history, but also for the nation,” he said.
“Melbourne ’56 and Sydney 2000 were both successes. And we want to work towards Brisbane 2032 being a success as well.”
