To the editor: As many locals might already know, our beloved mini donkey Weeman Murtz (Murty) vanished from his stall sometime before daybreak on Easter Sunday. ("Have you seen this donkey? Lanesborough residents search for missing equine on Sunday," Eagle, April 20.) I was absolutely devastated. There was evidence that a bear had entered the barn, and it appeared to me a struggle had ensued between my missing donkey and the bear. I feared the worst. After a quick search of our property with no sign of Murty, I called 911. Minutes later, Lanesborough Police Officer Jason Costa appeared and went into action. Soon, Lanesborough Animal Control Officer Dale Newbery was on scene, and the investigation began. In addition to my daughter Kayla, my husband, Jerry, and I were quickly joined in the search by neighbors Jeff, Will and Sierra Kellogg and our horse-sitter Lisa Kelly. Soon, Environmental Police Officer Jonathan Kolis appeared and aided the search and investigation. Despite there being no sign of Murty, many bears were spotted in the area, but the officers held out hope that Murty was alive. Lanesborough resident and Pittsfield Police Officer Darren Derby piloted his drone in search of Murty. With no sign of Murty, the search continued Monday morning with the addition of Environmental Police Officer Collins from the Pioneer Valley area. Monday evening, I sat feeling hopeless on our porch with officer Newbery. He maintained his belief that Murty was still alive. Within minutes, I received a text from officer Costa to call officer Derby “ASAP." Officer Derby had located Murty in the woods between the old Skyline golf course and the mall road. Soon, Murty was home, albeit a bit disheveled, in his cozy stall next to his very concerned equine buddies. ("Lanesborough donkey found safe after two-day search," Eagle, April 21.)
