The Nabua Broncos women’s rugby league team beat Lami Steelers 4 – 0 in the Fiji National Rugby League women’s (FNRLW) competition at Bidesi grounds in Suva on Saturday.
Team manager Maika Koroi said the win was significant as it showed the team’s progress and potential in its first season participating in the competition.
“We would like to acknowledge divine intervention for the win and most of our players are secondary school students,” he said.
“Most of the players have played rugby league for the first time.”
Koroi also dedicated the win to the club supporters and to the players’ family members.
“The youngest player in our team is 16 years old and two of our players travel from Korovou in Tailevu,” he said.
“They do their own training, and they travel to Suva after school on Friday.”
Koroi had set a target to reach the FNRLW east elimination round in their first season.
“There’s a big improvement from their first game to this game. They managed to hold off the Lami Steelers from scoring,” he said.
‘I know they can do better from here. I think it will be a good year for our women’s team this year.”
Koroi revealed that the club’s biggest challenge is that the team does not have a proper jersey kit.
“We don’t have any sponsors to sponsor our women’s team, so we are in need of sponsors to boost the players in preparation,” he said.
“Two of our players have been scouted to join the Bulikula squad after our match against Lami Steelers.”
