Bruno Fernandes rejects claim about how he decided his Manchester United future

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has played down the role of his wife in his decision to reject Al-Hilal. Al-Hilal were interested in signing Mohamed Salah from Liverpool , but Salah committed his future to Anfield and they turned their attention to landing Fernandes as a marquee signing. Last week, Fernandes' agent met with Al-Hilal officials in Saudi Arabia to discuss a move. Saudi reports claimed Fernandes had been offered a multi-million financial package to move to the Kingdom. However, there was no formal contact between the clubs and Fernandes rejected their proposal. Some reports suggested Ana Pinho, his wife, did not want to move to Saudi Arabia, but the midfielder poured cold water on those claims during a press conference on Tuesday evening. Fernandes has reported to Portugal for international duty and he was quizzed about Al Hilal. "It was a very exciting offer. The president of Al Hilal was very nice to me," he said. "They talked to my agent, but I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what I wanted to do with my future. Never did she say yes or no, or offer to make the decision for me. "She's always been behind me with every decision. It would have been easy to change, even from a family point of view, as Ruben Neves and João Cancelo are there [with Al-Hilal]. "Our kids are used to each other, I'm used to them, but I want to play at the highest possible level, playing in the major competitions and I know I still can. And I'm happy about my decision." Fernandes suggested his wife would have been supportive of a move to Al-Hilal, but explained their interest was rebuffed because he still wants to play at the top level in European football. Pinho and Fernandes have a daughter and son, who were at Old Trafford on the final day of the campaign. The Portugal international won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for a fourth time this season, joining David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only other players who have won it four times. Fernandes' contract runs until the summer of 2027, with the option of another year. --- Here at The Manchester Evening News, we are dedicated to bringing you the best Manchester United coverage and analysis.
