The officials discussed the humanitarian crisis in central Somalia and plans for economic recovery initiatives.Mogadishu (HOL) — Galmudug’s Deputy President Ali Dahir Eid has urged Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) to deliver immediate aid to drought-affected communities in the region, warning that thousands are facing worsening humanitarian conditions.
Speaking during a high-level meeting in Mogadishu on Saturday with SoDMA Commissioner Mahamud Moahlim Abdulle, Eid said residents in parts of Galmudug, particularly near the Ethiopian border, are suffering from acute shortages of food, clean water, and shelter.
“The situation is dire,” Eid said. “People are in urgent need of assistance, and we are calling on SoDMA to respond immediately.”
Galmudug authorities are also pushing for longer-term solutions to address the structural vulnerabilities in the region. Eid proposed the establishment of a modern meat processing and cold storage facility to support the local livestock economy—an initiative he said could create jobs and boost economic resilience.
In response, Abdulle pledged SoDMA’s immediate support to address urgent needs and confirmed the agency’s willingness to partner with Galmudug on the livestock initiative. He added that the project would likely draw international funding through cooperation with Somalia’s development partners.
“We are ready to assist communities in crisis and support development projects that ensure long-term stability,” Abdulle said.
Somalia remains one of the countries most affected by climate change, with repeated droughts, insecurity, and displacement continuing to undermine humanitarian efforts. Aid agencies and local authorities face growing challenges due to limited access and funding shortfalls. SoDMA has been working to coordinate its efforts with regional administrations like Galmudug to scale up its response.
