Bryson DeChambeau lurking at PGA Championship as he continues major run
@Source: nypost.com
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Here he comes again. Bryson DeChambeau appears to be finding his major championship mojo — just in time for the PGA weekend at Quail Hollow. He’s played the majors about as consistently as anyone the past two years, with a tie for fifth at the Masters last month, a runner-up at last year’s PGA, a tie for sixth at the ’24 Masters and a win at the ’24 U.S. Open. The popular and polarizing DeChambeau followed a mediocre opening-round, even-par 71 with a 3-under 68 on Friday to vault himself into contention at yet another major. He stands just five shots off the lead held by Jhonattan Vegas entering the weekend, and that makes him dangerous. “I’ve just got to have my putting a little more on and keep playing the way I am,’’ he said. “It easily could be 7- or 8-under right now. I think a 65 or 64 is out there. I almost shot it out there today and I definitely saw it out there, I just didn’t accomplish it.’’ Si Woo Kim had a hole-in-one on the 250-yard par-3 sixth hole Friday, going from 3-under for the tournament to 5-under and just three shots out of the lead. Hideki Matsuyama’s streak of making the cut in 19 consecutive majors came to an end Friday as he finished 3-over and two shots outside the cutline. … Patrick Cantlay, for whom Joe LaCava caddies, failed to make the cut, but Joe Highsmith, for whom LaCava’s son, Joe Jr., caddies, shot 67 Friday, is 2-under and will play the weekend. Among the LIV Golf players in the field, Dustin Johnson had perhaps the poorest week of all, finishing 12-over, with 11 of the 20 club pros in the field shooting lower than he did. Johnson has been invisible in major championships since 2020, playing in 18 of them since ’21 with eight missed cuts and only three top 10s. Phil Mickelson followed his opening-round 79 with a 72 on Friday to finish 9-over. He actually had a good round going on Friday (3-under through 11) before he got to No. 12, where he took a stunning four shots to splash out of a greenside bunker and took a quadruple bogey 8. There’ve been some frustrating moments for some players who haven’t handled them so well. After hitting a hot tee shot into the creek on 18 on Friday, Englishman Tyrrell Hatton, known for his hot temper, was caught on camera using some salty language, which included use of the words “s–t’’ and “f–k.’’ “Yeah, [I was] running hot at the moment,’’ Hatton explained afterward. “I’m pretty good at sometimes saying the wrong thing. I’ll leave it at that.’’ Hatton was one shot off the lead at 5-under before taking triple bogey on 18 that dropped him to 2-under and 23rd place. Later, Irishman Shane Lowry, on the eighth hole with 57 yards to the flag, hit a combination chunk-shank and was so angry he buried the blade of his wedge into the ground, taking out a huge slab of turf as he said, “F–k.’’ He was apparently angry because he was not given relief with his ball plugged in the fairway. Canadian Adam Hadwin, who ended up shooting 80 on Friday, was in such a funk while in a bogey streak that he texted his wife during his round and told her to book flights home because he knew he had no chance to make the cut. “Just getting our daughter and myself all ready and headed out the door to the course,” Jessica Hadwin posted on X. “My husband texting ‘book us flights.’ ” Englishman Richard Bland, at 52 years old and playing on LIV Golf, is 3-under through 36 holes. It’s just the sixth time a player 50 or older was 3-under or lower at the halfway point of a PGA Championship. … Matthieu Pavon recorded the lowest major championship round of his career (6-under 65), which matched the lowest score ever by a Frenchman at a major.
