TORTOLA — A players’ list of the British Virgin Islands’ men’s national soccer team that will play in three upcoming matches was quietly released late Monday night on the BVI Football Association’s social media pages.
However, other than the 23-man roster and new head coach David Perez Asensio, no assistant or positio9n coaches and other team personnel were listed on the social media posts. The roster also wasn’t sent to local media despite promises made by two BVIFA officials less than three weeks ago.
Following the social media post, which appeared on the BVIFA’s Facebook page around 8:30 p.m., The Daily News reached out to marketing and media officer Allison Scatliffe-Williams late Monday night.
During CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani’s visit to Tortola to meet with BVIFA officials May 10, Scatliffe-Williams and technical director Paul Decels both said that a separate press conference to announce the team would come later.
Scatliffe-Williams was asked Tuesday afternoon why the press conference wasn’t held, or why there was no listing of the team’s accompanying officials and the officials’ roles (besides Asensio) in the social media post ahead of the team’s departure for St. Vincent on Wednesday.
“That’s all the information I was given,” Scatliffe-Williams responded to The Daily News via text message. “Time didn’t allow a follow up press conference.”
There was no response to calls and a text message to BVIFA president Avanell “Clarky” Morton for comment.
The Nature Boys are scheduled to play St. Vincent and the Grenadines in an international friendly at 8 p.m. today at the Arnos Vale Stadium on St. Vincent in the BVI’s final tune-up match before playing in the second round of the CONCACAC Qualifiers for the FIFA 2026 World Cup, which begin in early June.
The BVI, which advanced to the second round after beating out Caribbean neighbor and rival U.S. Virgin Islands in a two-match series in March 2024, will open against Dominica on June 4 at Windsor Park Stadium, then move to Tortola to host Jamaica on June 7 at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground. Both matches are set for 3 p.m. starts.
The British Virgin Islands is already 0-0-2 in group play in the second round of the CONCACAF Qualifiers, having lost to Guatemala 3-0 on June 8, 2024, and to the Dominican Republic 4-0 on June 11, 2024.
The Nature Boys’ roster will have Harry Foden and Frankie Beckles as goalkeepers; defenders Ikyjah “KyKy” Williams, Troy “Kavon” Caesar, Miguel Marshall, Momchil Yordanov, Jerry Wiltshire, Quelani Nickie and Aaron Matthews; midfielders William Robert Green, T’Sharne Gallimore, Alejandro Jose Santos, Joshua Bertie, Carson Prince, Kristian Javier, Luka Chalwell, Joel Mars and Jake Allen Forbes; and forwards: Tyler Forbes, Johari Lacey, Levon Williams, Hugo Costa Liziario and Jauvan Splatt.
