Syracuse, N.Y. -- Former Syracuse men’s basketball star Carmelo Anthony will be the school’s commencement speaker this year.
The school announced on Tuesday that Anthony will be the primary speaker during the event, which will take place this year on Sunday, May 11, at 9:30 a.m.
Anthony played only one season of college basketball for the Orange but made it into what may be the best one-and-done season in the history of college basketball.
He helped the Orange win the school’s first NCAA Tournament championship in 2003 and was named a consensus All-American as a freshman after averaging 22.2 points and 10 rebounds per game.
Anthony went on to be drafted No. 3 in the NBA Draft and thrived at both the NBA and international levels of the sport.
He was a 10-time NBA All-Star and won three Olympic gold medals, playing so well on the Olympic stage that he was dubbed, “Olympic Melo” when playing international basketball.
He currently ranks 10th all-time in points scored during an NBA career and 12th among players who competed in the NBA or ABA.
When he makes his speech, there’s a good chance that Anthony will officially be on his way into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
He is a finalist in this year’s Hall of Fame class. The inductees will be announced April 5 at the NCAA Men’s Final Four. Anthony is the highlight nominee among men’s basketball players.
Anthony’s commencement speech will come shortly before his son, Kiyan, begins his freshman year at Syracuse.
