SEATTLE -- Casey Mize pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his first start of 2025 to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 4-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Park.
The Tigers (2-3) have won two in a row after being swept by the Dodgers in the season-opening series in Los Angeles. They’ll try to sweep the Mariners (2-4) on Wednesday afternoon.
Mize, a former No. 1 overall pick who had to fight to win a rotation spot this spring, allowed a hit to Mariners leadoff man Victor Robles in the first inning, but didn’t give up another.
Three walks, including two in his final inning of work, were the only blemishes on his record. Mize struck out six and got 15 swings and misses, including multiple whiffs on his fastball, slider and splitter.
The Tigers got on the board early against Mariners starter Logan Gilbert. That was a good thing because he was unhittable in his final two innings.
In the first, Riley Greene doubled and scored on Kerry Carpenter’s single. Then he Carpenter scored on Colt Keith’s RBI base hit.
In the third, Zach McKinstry singled, stole second and then scored on Spencer Torkelson’s double.
After the double, Gilbert struck out seven of the next nine batters and finished with 10 Ks in his five-inning start.
Riley Greene padded the lead with a solo home run to lead off the eighth against Mariners reliever Trent Thornton.
Three Tigers relievers joined Mize in pitching a combined one-hitter. Veteran Tommy Kahnle pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save as a Tiger.

Up next: The Tigers wrap up this three-game series and their six-game, season-opening road trip with the finale against the Mariners on Wednesday at 4:10 p.m. Eastern time.
Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal (0-1, 7.20 ERA) will face M’s right-hander Luis Castillo (0-1, 3.60). It’s the second start of the season for both pitchers.
Skubal led the league in wins (18), ERA (2.39), and strikeouts (228) in 2024, becoming the first pitcher to lead all three categories in a full season since Justin Verlander (Tigers) and Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers) both did it in 2011. He’s also the first Tigers pitcher to win the AL Cy Young since Max Scherzer in 2013.
