Champions League final 2027 venue 'confirmed' as UEFA strip stadium of rights

The 2027 Champions League final was initially set to be played at the San Siro but has been moved due to refurbishment concerns, UEFA announced after stripping the iconic venue of hosting rights. The iconic Milan stadium, confirmed as the destination back in May 2024 alongside Budapest's Puskas Arena for the 2026 final, is no longer suitable according to a UEFA statement in September. UEFA explained: "As the Municipality of Milano could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and its surroundings would not be affected by refurbishment works in the period of the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, it was decided not to assign the final to Milan and to re-open the bidding process to appoint a suitable venue, with a decision expected in May/June 2025." Despite this, reports suggest UEFA may have already settled on a new location, with Atletico Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium and Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan put forward as potential venues. Rafael Louzan, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), told Marca as reported by Football Espana that Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium is "guaranteed" to host the showcase match. Louzan stated: "This year, Spain has the Europa League final at San Mames, we're also guaranteed the 2027 Champions League final at the Metropolitano in Madrid, and why not ask, with our support, for Seville to host one of the upcoming European finals in this stadium?". "I've been with [UEFA president Aleksander] Ceferin two or three times, and we'll ask him about the possibility of Seville hosting a city because we have the venue, the city, and a fantastic hotel infrastructure to host events of this nature." The Metropolitano last hosted the Champions League final in 2019, where Liverpool triumphed over Tottenham Hotspur 2-0, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi sealing the victory, reports the Mirror . Despite its pedigree, the Metropolitano might miss out on the 2030 World Cup games, which are primarily set to take place in Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, with Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay also playing host. Initially listed as one of the 11 potential venues by the RFEF, the Metropolitano could step aside for Valencia's Nou Mestella, as revealed by Louzan: "Atletico Madrid have said that, once again very generously, they would be willing, even if necessary, to give up their space so that Valencia could be one of the eleven venues currently granted to Spain," he disclosed.
