TIRUPATI: YSRC president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s visit to Bangarupalem on Wednesday, originally described as a meeting with mango farmers, looked more like a chaotic political gathering, with large crowds ignoring police restrictions, leading to traffic snarls, unrest within crowds and clashes with police.Jagan Mohan Reddy arrived by helicopter from Bengaluru for a scheduled interaction with mango farmers at the Bangarupalem agricultural market yard. However, despite clear police guidelines allowing only 30 people at the helipad near the Aragonda flyover and 500 at the market yard, hundreds of YSRC supporters thronged the helipad and thousands entered the market before Jagan’s arrival. The crowd build-up disrupted traffic on the busy Chittoor-Bengaluru National Highway and adjoining roads. Vehicles piled up for nearly 15 km. Despite police establishing multiple checkpoints across Bangarupalem and nearby mandals, inspecting vehicles and verifying identities, YSRC workers bypassed check posts and walked long distances to reach the market yard. Police, however, stopped senior YSRC leaders, including Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, Bhumana Karunakar Reddy, R.K. Roja, and Venkata Goud from entering the market yard, prompting allegations of political bias. Although no permission had been given for a procession, a large convoy of vehicles followed Jagan Mohan Reddy’s route from the helipad to the venue. The journey, marked by frequent halts as Jagan Mohan Reddy greeted supporters, took nearly two hours. At one point, police were forced to resort to a mild lathi-charge after a surge of supporters created a stampede-like situation. Several, including YSRC leader Vijayananda Reddy and women activists, fell down. A youth wing leader suffered a head injury. Upon learning this, Jagan Mohan Reddy attempted to get down from his convoy to speak to the injured. He was stopped by superintendent of police V.N. Manikantha Chandolu, who cited security concerns. Addressing media later, he questioned the police’s conduct during the event. The event included a scuffle during which YSRC workers assaulted the photographer of a local daily.
