Chelsea maintain unbeaten WSL status as Arsenal claim Liverpool revenge
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Chelsea came from behind to maintain their unbeaten status in the Barclays Women’s Super League courtesy of a 2-1 win over Manchester City . It keeps Chelsea eight points clear at the summit despite 4-0 wins for both Arsenal and Manchester United . Leicester City assuaged their relegation fears with a gutsy 3-2 win over Brighton , while Everton beat bottom side Crystal Palace 3-0 and West Ham got past Spurs 2-0. Chelsea produced the perfect response to their first defeat of the season with a comeback 2-1 win against Manchester City . The Blues were beaten for the first time in all competitions in midweek, as Vivianne Miedema struck twice to help City to a 2-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League tie. It looked like City would make it two wins in a row when Kerolin marked a stellar first half with a goal just after the half-hour mark. It could have been two, only for Jess Park to see her strike chalked off after the whistle was blown a second earlier for a foul on Kerolin, leaving City less than impressed. Chelsea struck back through Aggie Beever-Jones just after the break, and despite a strong second half from Khiara Keating, Erin Cuthbert got the winner in second-half stoppage time. Arsenal avenged their FA Cup defeat to Liverpool with a thumping 4-0 victory over the Reds at the Emirates. The Gunners’ 1-0 defeat earlier in March all but ended their trophy hopes for the season, but Renee Slegers’ side responded in ruthless fashion. Caitlin Foord opened the scoring with just under half an hour played before a Jasmine Matthews own goal doubled the lead a minute later. Mariona Caldentey made it 3-0 just before half time, and another own goal from Matthews after the break sealed an emphatic victory. Manchester United also bounced back from defeat to Liverpool with a 4-0 demolition of Aston Villa . An Elisabeth Terland double put United in control in the first half before Grace Clinton made it three on the stroke of half time. Leah Galton rounded off the win just after the hour mark to ensure United keep pace with Arsenal and open up a seven-point gap to Manchester City in the race for European qualification. Defeat continues Aston Villa’s struggles, with Natalia Arroyo still without a win as manager. The Villans remain just a point above the relegation zone and face back-to-back away trips to Liverpool and Spurs in desperate need of points. Leicester City pulled six points clear of the drop with a 3-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. The Foxes were forced to endure a nervy final ten minutes despite being 3-0 up at half time, when two second-half strikes almost saw the visitors steal a point. Shannon O’Brien opened the scoring after 12 minutes and Saori Takarada’s first goal of the season doubled the lead after 35 minutes. A Rachel McLauchlan own goal just before the break put the Foxes in complete control, before Brighton launched a late comeback. Madison Haley got one back for the visitors with just over 15 minutes remaining before Yuka Momiki missed a chance to seal all three points from the spot for the hosts. Fran Kirby made no mistake with her penalty for Brighton to reduce the deficit to one, but Leicester held on for a big three points. Everton brushed past bottom side Crystal Palace with a comfortable 3-0 win. Justine Vanhaevermaet put the Toffees ahead at the break before Sara Holmgaard scored immediately after the restart. Kelly Gago sealed victory late on to lift Everton 10 points clear of Palace at the bottom of the table. Defeat keeps Palace rooted to the foot of the table, and face Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City amongst their final five matches meaning home matches against West Ham and Leicester could be pivotal to their survival chances. West Ham continued their strong recent form with a 2-0 win over London rivals Spurs. A Josefine Rybrink own goal put the Hammers ahead early in the first half and Viviane Asseyi sealed the victory late in the second half. The three points mean West Ham are almost guaranteed safety, in part thanks to their recent showings which have also seen the Hammers beat Brighton and draw with Manchester City. Defeat was Spurs’ fifth loss in a row, and though they are likely safe from the drop, Robert Vilahamn will want his side to turn their form around and finish the season strong.
