Chiefs vs Crusaders: Red-hot Chiefs challenge Crusaders’ reign in Super Rugby Pacific final
@Source: indiatimes.com
Damian McKenzie and the Waikato Chiefs are aiming to make it third time lucky as they square off against the powerhouse Canterbury Crusaders in yet another all-New Zealand Super Rugby Pacific final in Christchurch on Saturday.McKenzie, the dynamic All Blacks flyhalf, has been in scintillating form this season, orchestrating a lethal backline behind a powerful forward pack as the Chiefs surged to a third consecutive final. Despite their consistency, heartbreak has followed - losing to the Crusaders in 2023 and the Auckland Blues last year - leaving this talented Chiefs side still chasing their first title since Dave Rennie’s back-to-back triumphs in 2012 and 2013.Saturday will also mark the end of an era, with head coach Clayton 'Donk' McMillan set to depart for Irish club Munster after transforming the Chiefs into perennial contenders post-COVID.The Crusaders will be boosted by the return of All Blacks prop Tamaiti Williams as they hunt their eighth Super Rugby title in nine years in Saturday’s home final against the Waikato Chiefs.The Crusaders, the most successful team in Super Rugby history with 14 titles, will be looking to extend their record tally, and head coach Rob Penney believes the return of Williams significantly boosts their chances in the final. He was on the cusp of being ready last week but it's the blessing of having a great squad, Penney said. George Bower has done an amazing job and he's unlucky not to be starting but Tamaiti has got himself back into selection and he's going to get the opportunity. The Chiefs suffered a 37-17 defeat to the ACT Brumbies in their semi-final in Hamilton, following an earlier loss to the Auckland Blues in the first playoff round. However, they advanced to the final as the highest-ranked losing side, benefiting from the competition's playoff format.The Chiefs are expected to have strong backing from the sell-out crowd at Christchurch Stadium on Saturday, even if their iconic cowbells - long a symbol of their passionate fanbase - have been banned on health and safety grounds.While that absence may not weigh heavily on the players, they will have to overcome one of the most daunting records in Super Rugby history: the Crusaders have never lost a home playoff match in over 30 years, boasting 31 straight wins.Still, the Chiefs can draw confidence from recent encounters, having won five of their last seven meetings with the Crusaders, including both clashes - home and away - this season.Saturday’s sold-out Super Rugby final will mark the final match at Apollo Projects Stadium, the Crusaders’ temporary home since the 2011 Christchurch earthquake rendered Lancaster Park unusable.The 18,000-capacity venue will be replaced next year by a new, state-of-the-art 30,000-seat stadium, ushering in a new era for rugby in the city.
