Discovery Tour at lagoon
The Nature Collective hosts a free guided Discovery Tour from 10 to 11:30 a.m. June 7 starting at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, 2710 Manchester Ave. The walk is on the accessible Nature Center Loop Trail and is for ages 9 and older. Wildlife Tour at lagoon
A free Wildlife Tour is from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. June 14 at the San Elijo Lagoon. Visitors can see the aquatic dredge as 70,000 cubic yards of sand are removed from the lagoon, restoring the tidal exchange in this wetland. The event, hosted by the Nature Collective, is intended for ages 15 and older. The meetup location will be emailed to registered participants. Volunteers needed for habitat restoration
A volunteer Habitat Restoration event is from 9 a.m. to noon June 11 at the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and surrounding areas. Participants can remove invasive plants to help the growth of native plants in the habitat. The event is for adults and children ages 6 and older with guardian. Saving our Waterways topic of lagoon talk
The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation will host a presentation at 10 a.m. June 14 on “Saving Our Waterways,” led by Navy Mckee, CEO of Kai Pono Solutions. McKee invented a storm drain filtration device to work within the water infrastructure while also tracking flow rates, contaminants and maintenance cycles. The Movies in Memorial series kicks off June 14 with the film “The Goonies,” and runs through Aug. 9 at Memorial Park, 373 Park Way. Every other Saturday, there will be a free, family-friendly outdoor movie screening starting at sunset (about 7:30 p.m.) and ending at 9:30 p.m. Bring a blanket and your favorite snacks. Day at the Park
A Day at the Park, a family-friendly multicultural celebration, is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 14 at Chula Vista Bayfront Park, 980 Marina Way, presented by the Port of San Diego. Summer Solstice celebration
The Del Mar Village Association will put on its annual Del Mar Summer Solstice celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. June 12 at Powerhouse Park, 1658 Coast Blvd. The culinary event features robust bites from 15 Del Mar Village restaurants along with a curated selection of wine, beer and cocktails and live music, overlooking the ocean. Local performer Ben Benavente, accompanied by the Stateside Bruddahs, will play island-style music featuring reggae beats and instrumental looping. Proceeds go to community programs and initiatives. Harmonica concert and talk
Master harmonicist Fred Thompson will give a concert and discuss the History of the Harmonica at noon June 7 at the Heritage of the Americas Museum, 12110 Cuyamaca College Drive West. The talk will cover the invention of the harmonica and its role in America’s historical songs and its connection to Abraham Lincoln. Free Pet Vaccination Clinic
The Rancho Coastal Humane Society will host a free Pet Vaccination Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon June 14, while supplies last, at Brock’s Pet Food Bank on the animal shelter’s North Campus at 389 Requeza St. Vaccinations include DAPP for dogs, HCP for cats, and rabies. Yoga, sound therapy for cancer patients
A free class hosted by Scripps Cancer Center, combining yoga and sound therapy, is from 11 a.m. to noon at Scripps Encinitas Rehabilitation Services, 1092 N. El Camino Real, for cancer patients and their caregivers. Participants can rest or move gently through simple stretches with sounds from singing bowls, chimes, drums and gongs. The Escondido Bead & Design Show is set for June 13-15 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 N. Surf club holds art contest
The Windansea Surf Club is taking submissions through June 15 for its Menehune Art Contest. The contest is open to youths ages 18 and younger. Artists can submit up to three pieces and do not have to be club members. The winner will receive a cash prize of $150, and the art will be featured on event promotional material, including poster, program and T-shirt. Filipino Cultural Celebration
The nonprofit Filipino-American Cultural Organization and the Oceanside Public Library will put on the 24th annual Filipino Cultural Celebration, themed “Philippine Arts & Culture at its Best,” from noon to 6 p.m. June 14 in the Oceanside Civic Center Plaza and on Pier View Way. Highlights include Philippine folk dancing and music, colorful costumes and vendors along with Filipino cuisine and fashion show highlighting the evolution of Filipiniana culture. Scholarships will be awarded to area Filipino American high school seniors. Veterans group puts on car show
The Veterans Association of North County will put on its seventh annual Car Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 14 at the VANC resource center, 1617 Mission Ave. The show will feature a wide range of extraordinary cars, trucks and vehicles along with live music. All years, makes and models are welcome and trophies will be given to “The Best” in several categories. A pancake breakfast is at 8 a.m. for registrants. Quilting enthusiasts gather
The nonprofit El Camino Quilters Guild meets at 9:30 a.m. June 10 at El Corazon Senior Center, 3302 Senior Center Drive. The guest speaker is Jenny Lyon, who will discuss “Tippy Top Tips for Successful Free Motion Quilting.” The guest fee is $10. Lyon’s workshop, “Yes, You Can Free Motion Quilt,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 11 at the Quilt in a Day shop in San Marcos. The workshop fee is $55. Old Town holds celebration
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park celebrates California State Parks Week with a free community event, “Pastimes at Old Town San Diego,” from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 14 in Plaza de Armas. The day of 19th-century-style outdoor recreation will feature a variety of traditional lawn games that once entertained early Californians, such as wheelbarrow races, sack races and tug-of-war. Greek Food and Cultural Festival
The 54th annual San Diego Greek Food and Cultural Festival is from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 14 and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 15 at Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 3655 Park Blvd. Live bands will perform traditional and contemporary Greek music, and youth dance troupes will perform folk dances in traditional costumes. Kinfolk Fest at Waterfront Park
The Kinfolk Fest, a Juneteenth celebration, will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. June 14 at Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Highway. The festival celebrates Black culture through live musical performances, high-energy DJ sets, R&B, hip hop, Afrobeats and a Black-owned vendor marketplace along with food and craft beverages, competitive spades tournaments and games. Juneteenth Jubilee at library
The San Diego Central Library will hold a Juneteenth Jubilee from noon to 5 p.m. June 14 at 330 Park Blvd. The event includes community, activities, live music from the Dennis Gittens Jazz Duo, poetry readings by the Back Alley Poetry Club and San Diego Poet Laureate Paola Capó-García, along with a Blacktronika talk by US San Diego professor King Britt. Fiber Fest at Liberty Station
A Fiber Fest will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 14 at the San Diego Craft Collective, 2590 Truxtun Road, Studio 106, at Liberty Station. The free event for all ages celebrates natural textiles and sustainability and brings together fiber artists, artisans, sustainability advocates and local farmers. The event shows the process of making natural textiles from sheep to finished fabric. There will be live demonstrations, artist vendors, workshops and interactive crafts. The 14th annual San Diego Brew Fest is from noon to 4 p.m. June 14 at Liberty Station NTC Park, 601 Farragut Road. There will be dozens of local and international craft beers along with popular food trucks and music. Point Loma Optimists put on gala fundraiser
The Point Loma Optimists will hold its annual fundraising event at 5 p.m. June 14 at the Bali Hai Restaurant on Shelter Island. The event will feature dinner, live entertainment, and silent and live auctions followed by a paddle raise. Proceeds go toward supporting local peninsula youth groups. Island Vibe Music Festival

Volunteer dentists help community
Locally based nonprofit Cura Smiles provides free dental services by volunteer dentists to community members in need who would not otherwise have dental care. The clinic at 4101 University Ave. is typically open Tuesdays, Thursdays and on some Saturdays. They accept walk-in patients, but have a long waitlist. The nonprofit is looking for fundraising support from the community to continue its services. Visit curasmiles.org.

Animal shelter extends weekend hours
The San Diego Humane Society is extending its hours to 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays at all its campuses through Oct. 25 so the community has more flexibility to visit the shelter and meet adoptable pets. The shelter has more than 1,800 animals in its care, including more than 700 ready for adoption. The campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego are also open for adoptions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. Visit sdhumane.org/adopt.
Fees waived for Adopt-a-Pet Day
The San Diego Humane Society and Rancho Coastal Humane Society will be among more than 150 animal shelters in California that will waive pet adoption fees on June 7 for adult dogs, cats and rabbits (puppies and kittens not included), as part of the second California Adopt-a-Pet Day. The event is hosted by the California Animal Welfare Association, San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The goal is 5,000 pet adoptions in one day. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego will hold its 22nd annual Don Coryell Charity Golf Classic on June 20 at the Steele Canyon Golf Club, 3199 Stonefield Drive, Jamul. Discounted pet adoption
The San Diego County Animal Services offers pet adoption fees of $25 through June 7 for pets 6 months old and older at its shelters in Bonita at 5821 Sweetwater Road and Carlsbad at 2481 Palomar Airport Road. This fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, up-to-date vaccinations and a one-year DocuPet dog license for residents in the county service area. Visit sddac.com.
Padres shirts for blood donors
The San Diego Blood Bank offers a limited-edition Padres Summer Blood Drive T-shirt to those who donate blood at a San Diego Blood Bank donor center or mobile blood drive throughout the month of June, while supplies last. To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Hawaiian-themed Summer Solstice gathering

A Classic Jazz in Four Hands concert is at 6:30 p.m. June 10 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 424 Via de la Valle. The concert features Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi playing together on one piano. The duo will perform jazz classics, boogie-woogie and show tunes. A camera focused on the piano from above will allow the audience to see how the couple navigates the keyboard. Modern folk art exhibit
Leucadia-based mixed-media artist Roy Jenuine hosts an exhibit, “Roy Jenuine: Modern Folk Art,” from June 9 to July 6 at 312 S. Cedros Ave., Suite 180, showing his lifetime of work from 1978 through today blending wood, photography and found materials to create functional furniture to mixed-media assemblage. Pickleball Fundraiser supports music therapy
San Diego-based nonprofit Resounding Joy will put on its second Pickleball Fundraiser on June 28 at The Hub Pickleball, 9545 Campo Road. Proceeds will help fund the nonprofit’s Sounds of Service program for military members, veterans and first responders. Free meals for kids
The city of Vista will provide free breakfast from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from noon to 12:45 p.m. weekdays, June 9 to Aug. 8 (except July 4), for children ages 1 to 18 at the Jim Porter Recreation Center, 1200 Vale Terrace Drive, as part of California’s Summer Food Service Program. The program allows children to continue to receive nutritious meals during summer break when school meal programs are unavailable. There are no income requirements or registration. The Vista Friends and Newcomers group meets from 9:30 to 11 a.m. June 12 at the Broken Yolk Cafe, 2434 Vista Way, in Oceanside. The group hosts a variety of activities, from book club, bunco, mahjong, lunch groups, movies, theater and game day to wine tasting and the Afternoon Tea & Conversation Group. Kids in the Garden class
A Kids in the Garden class on Soil, Composting & Planting is offered from 10 a.m. to noon June 14 at Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, 1270 Vale Terrace Drive. The group will plant some seeds for summer crops. Bring plant-based kitchen garbage in a container to add to the compost. Adults stay with their kids. The class fee is $5 per person, which includes garden entry; free for garden members. Preregistration is required by noon June 13 at farmerjonesavbg@gmail.com.
Gala benefits Operation HOPE
Operation HOPE will put on its HOPE Illuminated Gala at 5 p.m. June 14 at the Hidden Barn, 762 Taylor St. The event raises money for the Vista-based nonprofit’s mission to help homeless community members by offering a safe, supportive place to rebuild their lives and regain independence. The event includes guest speakers, live entertainment, dinner, and stories of transformation. Tickets are $180–$250. Visit operationhopeshelter.org.
