The Portmarnock rookie (27) had missed six of his first eight cuts and his last three in a row.
But he saw positive signs in his game in Shanghai, where he closed with a two-under 69 to finish eight shots behind China's Ashun Wu at Enhance Anting Golf Club and win €30,317.
“I’m happy with a solid week,” Purcell said after a result that saw him leap 38 spots to 149th in the Race to Dubai.
“It’s time to push on now next week. My game has been better than my results suggest, but my play off the tee and my iron play were great this week.
“I gave myself a lot of looks and managed to make my share, so I am looking forward to getting to Mission Hills now.”
Wu (39) won his fifth DP World Tour title, almost ten years after he first triumphed in the Volvo China Open, carding a six-under 65 to win by a shot from England's Jordan Smith on 14-under.
“It’s very special,” Wu said. “Ten years ago, I won the Volvo China Open in Shanghai, and coming back to Shanghai, I’ve won again. That’s a great story.
“It was a great round. Great golf this week. I’m happy to win my country's open; it’s very, very exciting.”
He came from four strokes behind 54-hole leaders Eugenio Chacarra and compatriot Haotong Li to win for the first time since capturing the Magical Kenya Open in 2022.
He was three strokes behind Chacarra with nine holes to go but came home in five-under 31 to edge out Smith, who shot 67, by one stroke.
“It’s an incredible week,” added Wu, who lost full playing rights on the DP World Tour last year after finishing 115th in the Race to Dubai, one place outside the cut-off for the 2025 season.
“There were incredible fans here. A lovely golf course. Shanghai is my home. I felt pretty relaxed because I'm playing at home. Home has given me luck.”
In the UAE, Italy's Renato Paratore carded a four-under 66 to win the Abu Dhabi Challenge and claim back-to-back titles on the HotelPlanner Tour.
He birdied two of his last four holes to finish on 17 under par, one shot clear of Spaniard Sebastian Garcia and Scot David Law, who set the clubhouse lead with a nine-under 61.
“I feel amazing,” Paratore said. “I still can’t believe it. To make two birdies in the last four holes, I am really happy.
“I felt confident coming into today because I won last week but I knew it was tough today because there were a lot of people in contention.”
Royal Dublin's Max Kennedy shot a level par 70 to tie for 47th on five-under but Dermot McElroy's 73 left him 65th on one-under as Jonathan Caldwell shot 74 to finish 73rd on three-over.
The HotelPlanner Tour takes a two-week break before the Challenge de España from May 8-11.
