Controversy Finds Wyndham Clark Yet Again at Arnold Palmer Invitational
@Source: newsweek.com
Things were going very smoothly for Wyndham Clark at the Arnold Palmer Invitational through a round and change.Clark is in contention thanks to a first-round 67 that put him alone at the top of the leaderboard. He followed that up with a 1-under-par 71 on Friday to get to 6-under heading into the weekend. That is currently solo second behind Shane Lowry, who went low on Friday.Clark's second round was not without controversy, though. On the par-4 third hole, his tee shot bounced and then rolled into a pitch mark in the fairway. Clark took relief and played out of a better lie, eventually making par.Golf fans everywhere were up in arms as the debate raged about whether Clark should be penalized.The PGA decided against penalizing the 2023 U.S. Open champion with the following statement about the incident."After reviewing ShotLink video of Wyndham Clark's tee shot on the third hole during the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, the PGA TOUR Rules Committee determined that the ball returned to its own pitch mark, which entitled Clark to free relief," the statement, posted on X, read.Clark went on about his business and will likely be in one of the final groupings on Saturday.During the round, the Colorado native didn't know that there was any controversy surrounding the incident."Yeah, didn't know there was any confusion obviously when I'm playing," Clark said after his round. "When we hit it I was asking for it to stop. We never saw it bounce. Then we get up there and it's in a plugged lie. It was filled with -- my ball was covered with mud. So we took relief, didn't think anything of it, and, yeah."Clark was also involved in some rules controversy last year at Bay Hill when he allegedly improved his lie while contending during the third round.Clark's results have been rocky so far this season, so he will be pleased with these two rounds and will be relieved to have avoided a penalty as he chases a big trophy over the weekend.More Golf: Wyndham Clark in Position for Arnold Palmer Redemption on Scottie Scheffler
