Craig Bellamy stops Sky Sports presenter in his tracks over Wales questions in awkward interview

Wales boss Craig Bellamy stopped Sky Sports presenter Dave Jones in his tracks after the Monday Night Football host suggested he was in charge of a "small football nation". The 45-year-old appeared on Sky Sports’ show last night as part of the coverage of his former team Newcastle United's 3-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League. While on the programme he commented on what life has been like as Wales manager, a role he took up in July of last year after Rob Page's departure. During his eight games in charge of the Dragons so far Bellamy has not yet lost, winning four and drawing the rest and has taken four points from six in the first two games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Jones was shut down by the Wales boss when he suggested Wales was a "smaller footballing nation". “No, no, I disagree,” said a stern Bellamy, almost immediately after the label from Jones. Jones was left slightly taken aback by Bellamy’s reply which led pundit and former Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher to say “start that again, Dave!”. The presenter then gave it another go, calling Wales "a big footballing nation" with a smile, which he then corrected to "a proud footballing nation" but added they aren’t "high achieving" and don’t have an "incredible history". Bellamy again was quick to correct the host, responding: “Well, the semi-finals of Europe in 2016 I think gives us a little bit.” In Jones’ third attempt at questioning Bellamy he implied that his side are underdogs in world football, a fact which Bellamy once again refuted. “I’ve never looked at myself as an underdog and I never will do now and I won’t allow the players to believe that, you know we’re there on merit,” he said. A tad flustered, Jones gave it a final go: “But this is what I’m trying to get to, that you’re, really the first thing you’re having to do is try to change the culture.” “It’s a culture that, look, we’re proud, a lot of nations are proud,” said Bellamy. “Football is a huge part of our culture as well. I know we’re definitely proud of the rugby but football is a huge game in our country. “What we’ve been able to build over the last number of years, and that’s previous managers, but also Together Stronger. There’s a real connection between the fans and the players and also with the players and the fans. “And to be able to come into that… Now of course I was fully aware of how they played before, compared to how I’m looking to play them, I know the gap, I’m realistic enough. “The Nations League was to try and bring that a little bit closer and get us in a position so that we can attack the World Cup qualifiers. “But from day one, it was you know like, when I spoke to the players I wanted to create an identity, I want us to have courage, I want us to have enjoyment, we have to enjoy this you know. “When I talk about build up, get on the ball! Now I’ll give you the options about being side-on, making sure we’re scanning, timing, you name it, we can get all that right but you have to enjoy it.”
