Cricket Association of Telangana Urges HCA Dissolution, Backs Govt's Anti-Corruption Stance

Hyderabad: The Cricket Association of Telangana (CAT) has sought the immediate dissolution of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) and recommended the appointment of an ad-hoc committee to manage state cricket affairs. In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, CAT founder secretary Sunil Babu Kolanpaka highlighted decades of systemic corruption and mismanagement within the HCA. He said that HCA had consistently neglected rural cricket talent by focusing exclusively on Hyderabad city. This exclusion, he said, stemmed from the dominance of non-Telanganite club owners who have perpetuated corrupt practices. Sunil Babu mentioned the leasing of HCA clubs at exorbitant rates to third parties, which fuelled corrupt selection processes. He also questioned the annual Rs 5 lakh maintenance payments made to club owners. Despite receiving over Rs 70 crore annually from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), HCA had failed to build cricket infrastructure in Telangana. Instead, it continued to rely on government-leased venues like the Rajiv Gandhi stadium at Uppal. Over the last 25 years, with thousands of crores in funds, the absence of a single stadium owned by HCA is a glaring failure, Sunil Babu said. The CAT criticised the infighting within HCA, noting that no committee had completed its full three-year term in 15 years, often leaving the association under court-appointed management. This turmoil had stifled cricketing talent, with Hyderabad failing to produce notable players recently. The absence of Hyderabad players in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), compared to five from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, underscored HCA’s shortcomings, he said. Sunil Babu appealed to the government to ban HCA and grant associate membership to CAT for the 23 new districts, which lack representation. He sought the allocation of five acres per district to develop cricket infrastructure. He said dismantling the existing 217 clubs and overhauling the HCA was essential to revive Hyderabad cricket’s glory.
