As the much-awaited IPL 2025 finally kicks off on Saturday with its first clash set to take between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the country’s iconic Eden Gardens, it’s Lucknow Super Giants franchise that has somehow managed to grab the attention of fans and critics alike. Why? LSG had an idea to sit down with their star player David Miller and quiz the South African on the worst heartbreaks he has been involved in on the cricket field. Chasing India’s target of 177 runs, South Africa looked well underway to serving India a massive upset. Both Miller and Heinrich Klaasen looked set and South Africa required 26 off 24. They still had 6 wickets in their kitty. Then, South Africa made a blunder of it. Needing 16 off 6, Hardik Pandya was given the responsibility to bowl the final over, in what turned out to a nail-biting last few minutes. ODI Cricket World Cup – 2023 South Africa were beaten by Australia in an edge-of-the-seat semi-final contest at the Eden Gardens where the Proteas lost by three wickets, continuing their woes in the knockout events. David Miller scored a stunning 101 on the big day but South Africa posted a below-par 212 on the scoreboard. But that turned out to be a stiff target for Australia to chase, who found themselves struggling at 193-7 at one stage. T20I World Cup – 2021 South Africa were a force to reckon with during the T20I World Cup in 2021 as they were all set to advance to the semi-finals but luck did not favour them. Miller found himself on the losing end once again. ODI Cricket World Cup – 2019 The Proteas ended their 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup with just three points from seven games. In their final encounter, Pakistan registered a 49 run win over South Africa in the group stage encounter at the Lord’s. Miller (31 off 37) got a good start while chasing Pakistan’s 308 but in the end, South Africa could only muster up 259 on the board. Miller has also been a part of the South African squad that lost the semifinal of 2015 ODI Cricket World Cup to New Zealand. The Kiwis won the contest by 4 wickets and only a delivery to spare when Grant Elliott smacked a six as his side needed 5 off 2. The visuals of the aftermath were heartbreaking that no cricket fan would want to revisit, let alone Miller. Coming back to IPL, Miller has reached the finals of the tournament during his associations with Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans. His first final loss came in IPL 2014 while the second loss was in a nail-biting thriller against Chennai Super Kings where the yellow army won on the very last ball of the night.
