UEFA cracks down on Lazio with fines and sanctions
Despite Lazio’s on-field success, their European campaign has been marred by controversy, especially after their Round of 16 tie against Viktoria Plzen.
UEFA swiftly responded to reports of racist abuse from Lazio’s supporters, issuing a €30,000 fine and barring the club from having fans at their next away match in Europe.
In addition to this, Lazio were also fined €3,250 for the use of flares and smoke bombs during the fixture, adding further financial strain on the club.
These sanctions come as a reminder of UEFA’s strict stance on racism in football, with Lazio being no strangers to previous disciplinary actions for similar incidents.
Dele-Bashiru returns as Lazio march on in Europe
While the controversy raged off the pitch, Super Eagles star Fisayo Dele-Bashiru quietly made his return from injury in the second leg against Plzen.
The Nigerian midfielder, who had been sidelined with an ankle injury, played 11 minutes as Lazio secured a 1-1 draw to confirm their progression.
Before his setback, Dele-Bashiru had been a key figure in Lazio’s European campaign, starting five out of eight matches, scoring two goals, and providing two assists.
With Lazio set to face Bodo/Glimt in the quarter-finals, the Nigerian playmaker will hope to reclaim his spot in the starting lineup and help the Biancocelesti continue their impressive Europa League run.
