Derek McInnes all set to join Hearts – and his first game could be AGAINST former club

DEREK McINNES looks set to take charge of Kilmarnock one final time before joining Hearts. The Jambos have made their move to appoint the 53-year-old as Neil Critchley’s replacement. But SunSport understands negotiations are now unlikely to be concluded before the midweek Premiership fixtures. And that could see McInnes’ first game as Hearts boss come AGAINST Killie on Sunday. The Ayrshire side face Motherwell at Fir Park with Hearts at home to St Johnstone. And it’s anticipated McInnes will still be in charge of his current club for the next 48 hours at least. That will see Liam Fox remain as caretaker boss of the Jambos for another game. McInnes is also expected to address the media tomorrow afternoon at Killie’s pre-match press conference. Hearts, though, are still confident of striking a deal to make him their boss before the weekend. As SunSport revealed last week, their move has been given the thumbs up by Tony Bloom’s data firm Jamestown Analytics. And club chiefs Ann Budge and Andrew McKinlay are desperate to make it happen. Talks between the clubs began yesterday over compensation. Once that’s agreed then McInnes will be granted permission to finally discuss terms with the Gorgie club. But SunSport understands he will NOT quit Kilmarnock until after the midweek fixtures. Any deal would end McInnes’ three-year spell at Rugby Park. Killie chief Billy Bowie is reluctant to lose McInnes, who led the club back to the top flight from the Championship. But he is also refusing to stand in his way. Steven Naismith, axed by Hearts earlier this season, is now the frontrunner for a return to Killie — where he started his career.
