Special Olympics Malawi has urged parents with children who have intellectual disabilities or any other form of disability not to lock up the children in homes as this infringes on the children’s right to education.
One of the officials at Special Olympics Malawi, Symon Henry Batson, made the remarks in Mwanza District at the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools event.
The event involved various games for children with intellectual disabilities at the Mwanza Secondary School Sports Ground.
Batson highlighted the importance of mindset change among parents towards the capabilities of children with disabilities, including participating in athletics.
Mwanza Secondary School’s Head Teacher, John Saka, commended Special Olympics Malawi for bringing the children together.
He said it provided a platform for them to showcase their talents despite their disabilities.
